Why is Omar Minaya pulling a George Steinbrenner?
I can't help but wonder why Omar Minaya is building up the payroll of the Mets by acquiring all of these allstar calibar players. Isn't he aware that George Steinbrenner has been trying this with the Yankees for the past several years now and hasn't had much success? The yankees can't buy a world series now a day's because they always have an overpaid allstar team that can't seem to work together. What makes Omar Minaya think the Mets can do any better?Tags: None -

Umm.. but Minaya is actually signing players at the PRIME of their careers (other than Lo Duca) -

Because their network is launching in a few months and they need some way to try and generate extra viewers and steal some viewers from YES.
And Billy Wagner is definately not in the prime of his career."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Yup, there you go. We are launching a new network and the more viewers we can get on there, the more ad revenue we will receive.Comment

Re: Why is Omar Minaya pulling a George Steinbrenner?
simple - 1) try playing in the same city as the Yanks -the competition for the headlines on the backpages is fierce (and Steinny was getting pretty upset that the Yanks hadn't done anything when the Mets got Delgado & Wagner)
2) their new network starts this year
3) no luxury tax this year for the Mets
4) they actually freed up some money by getting rid of Piazza, Cameron, & the ball-stealin' first baseman
5) Mets were dormats for several years after the 2000 series - they are also trying to get the fans back at Shea..
sometimes ya got to overspend (& i think the Jays actually overspent on BJ Ryan & are apparently willing to do so with Burnett)..Comment

I wish the Cubs can trade Hendry, Wood, Walker, Patterson to the Mets for Minyana and Benson.
Maybe that might make them a better team...Comment

Not to mention Pedro Martinez who Minaya acquired last year and he is also in his mid 30's.
If Minaya does anything it's acquire players toward the end of their career not in the prime of their career.Comment

Originally posted by Kohlstar20Your an idiot, you obviously didn't understand my post. I didn't say that acquiring allstar calibar players doesn't make a team better. What I was trying to say is that Omar Minaya isn't very smart if he thinks he can win games by stacking his team with a bunch of allstar calibar players. The Yankees have been doing this for several years now and it hasn't done them any good because they can't even get past the first round of the playoffs anymore. A team full of talented players isn't always a good thing because the expections are higher which in turn makes the players try and perform at a higher level than they are capable of and due to this most of them will struggle which effects the teams performance.
So what exactly would you like him to do?
And to my count, the Mets only have 3 all-star caliber players. Pedro Martinez, Carlos Delgado, and Billy Wagner.
Edit
Oh and David Wright, unless he is a one-hit wonder.Comment

Would you rather lose in the first round of the playoffs, or not get there at all?
Unless you're name is Brian Cashman, the offseason goal of the GM is not necessarily to win the World Series, but to make your team better than it was the previous season (which Minaya is doing). You can't put the Yankee expectations on Omar Minaya. Remember, before he came to the Mets, fans were begging the team to spend more money."Kevin Ollie is just like Jason Kidd. If Minaya does anything it's acquire players toward the end of their career not in the prime of their career.
2005 stats
Delgado: 33 HRs, 115 RBIs, and a .301 avg
Wagner: 38 out of 41 games saved. With a 1.51 era
I guess both Wagner and Delgado are late bloomers then huh?
I dont even remember who the Mets closer was last year.Comment

Originally posted by Kohlstar20He can do whatever he wants, he's the GM. Im aware that the Mets only have a few allstar calibar players at the moment but Omar Minaya isn't even close to being done acquiring players. By the time next season starts the Mets will probably have a similar team to the Yankees talent wise at the rate Minaya is going.
If the Mets are similar to the Yankees next year, that would mean they would have a bunch of old, overpaid, lazy players and I definately don't see the Mets going in that direction.Originally posted by billmaticRadman is more like the ******** homeless man's version of Okur.Comment
