Delgago isn't even close to the end of his career, but Wagner will prolly be there at the end of this new contract. Braden Looper attempted to be the closer last year for the Mets.

Re: Why is Omar Minaya pulling a George Steinbrenner?
apparently also they are getting a new 2b that should be announced as early as Thursday (Mark Gruzalenick- major sp).. at least they are putting together a decent team.. remember too, ya gotta take small steps first (the 80's mets started being built as early as 82 & kept adding pieces till the WS in 86) .. that would be interesting: comparing the makeup of the 86 mets to the mets now..Comment

Shoot, Looper couldn't even hold leads when I was playing as the Mets in MVP Baseball...Comment

Re: Why is Omar Minaya pulling a George Steinbrenner?
What do people outside of the 5 boroughs want from the Mets, and why are they whining so much? Omar is here to put together a winning team. Like Herm Edwards says, "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!". What do you want Fred Wilpon to do with the extra cash that came off the books and the cash thats gonna come in from the new network? You think the Mets will win a championship next year with Heath Bell or Bartolome Fortunato closing? Worry about what YOUR team is doing to to improve their chances of winning a world series in the future, because if it was your team making these moves, you would be creaming in your shorts!New York Mets

Re: Why is Omar Minaya pulling a George Steinbrenner?
All i'll say is this:
This reminds me of the early-mid 90s when they stocked up on '80s all stars who stunk up the joint with the Mets.
I know this is a bit different but the Mets seem to be snake bitten when they spend boatloads of money like this. If this works out all props go to Minaya but if it doesn't then he's going to be facing a lynch mob.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Why is Omar Minaya pulling a George Steinbrenner?
If I was a Mets fan I would be very pleased with the off-season so far.
The team is launching their own network next season and is actually spending a lot of dough in an attempt to win.
The only significant FA the Mets signed this off-season has been Wagner. Delgado and Lo Duca were aquired in trades.
It only gets better for Met fans because I have 2 of their prospects (Milledge and Pelfrey) in my top 10 list of best prospects in all of baseball.Comment

And to my count, the Mets only have 3 all-star caliber players. Pedro Martinez, Carlos Delgado, and Billy Wagner.
Edit
Oh and David Wright, unless he is a one-hit wonder.Comment

Re: Why is Omar Minaya pulling a George Steinbrenner?
Ask yourself this question.....If you were the Mets GM and teams inside your division such as Florida, Philly, and Atlanta are losing key star players, what do you do? You try to make the team better than the rest of the teams in your division!
Take advantage of it! Go for it Omar! And get us more pitching!Comment

Hey topic-creator:
Are you a fan of the Mets? Or are you just disgusted that they are taking every available big name out there?
Cause if your a Mets fan, and your particularly not happy with what Minaya is doing, then maybe you should think of becoming a fan of a different sport. As everybody has mentioned here, its a good thing for the Mets organization/fans. Yet it seems that your the only one really complaining about it.Comment

Anyway, I'm glad the Mets are trying to shake things up and make these moves. For one thing it's the happiest my father has been since 2000 (he's a diehard Mets fan) and I'd love to see the Yanks and Mets both be very good again, though I'm sure the rest of the baseball world would despise that (as evidenced by the rock bottom ratings of the '00 WS.)
My boy who works at ESPN now has an interview this week w. the Mets' network, trying to get an editing job or something there. Hopefully he gets it so I can get some free tix!!"You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Originally posted by Kohlstar20I can't help but wonder why Omar Minaya is building up the payroll of the Mets by acquiring all of these allstar calibar players. Isn't he aware that George Steinbrenner has been trying this with the Yankees for the past several years now and hasn't had much success? The yankees can't buy a world series now a day's because they always have an overpaid allstar team that can't seem to work together. What makes Omar Minaya think the Mets can do any better?
The Mets like to play fantasy baseball.
The thing about championships, you don't win them with all star quality players, it also takes role players and a solid bullpen.
Neither of which the Mets really have yet. I mean Wagner is nice but I am talking about MRP and setup guys.Comment
