I read that both Zito and the A's are open to giving any team a window to negotiate an extension. Zito would be well worth 12 million a year. He's a former Cy Young winner, and his record last season was not indicative of how he pitched. The defense behind him and his bullpen cost him several victories.

Yah i would hope so. I just don't see Zito as being very "signable" right now. Gammons had a column about it today saying "One close friend said Zito wouldn't sign right now for anything less than the Burnett deal, and is expecting to sign for "considerably more."

Zito's lack of signability is going to limit what teams are willing to give for him and we all know Beane won't give him up for less than top notch prospects.

The Mets said that if they trade for Zito, it won't be unless he signs a new deal then get traded. So The Mets want to do a sign an trade deal, so they can aviod getting him for one year.

The Mets payroll right now is about the same as it was last season. Some reports are coming out now that if Minaya makes any more moves he has to shed some payroll for Wilpon to approve a move.

that's why they want to trade Benson & get rid of Matsui (they are trying to sign Mark G. for 2nd)..

You are right, even with the moves they made, payroll is right where it was last year, around $108 million.

Yup, losing Piazza and Cameron brought the payroll down a bit.

                      Re: Zito to Mets?

I think if the Mets can trade one or two of the starting pitchers for a 2nd baseman and middle relief they will be ok heading into the season. I think that if Zito is moved it will be during the season if the A's aren't in the playoff hunt. Bean has said that he wants to make a one season run with Zito and I think he will roll the dice and see what the A's squad does next season. They are the leading team on Thomas and if they get him they have a nice upgrade at the DH slot.

Zito is a good pitcher, but hes overated and too incosistent to be considered great. I wouldn't empty the bank for him when I'm sure Javy Vazquez could be had for cheaper or you could sign a Jarrod Washburn.

His defense may not have been great, but Oakland had a pretty solid bullpen. I would say those 3.5 walks per game start are more indicative of why Zito's record was what it was. Zito hasn't been anything special since his Cy-Young season (a year he shouldn't have even won the Cy) but the media still over values him constantly.

And it wasn't Benson that made comments about Delgado, it was his wife. Who cares? I bet Delgado doesn't. Again, the media-overplaying something. Trading Benson doesn't shed payroll considering he's become a value given what Burnett just signed for.

I think Zito would fit in great with My Mets, His 86-53 record I'll take any day, I love his sick curveball, when he on that curveball is one of the best in the leauge, he a leftie and I think that would be good for us. Plus I really think Zito would be a better in the NL for some reason. The Mets are bulit to win now not 3 years from now, so Zito will be a very nice edtion. Even if it cost us Milege. It's not a given Milege would be an allstar, and he's a CF and we got Beltran for another 6 years, so I just don't see Milege fitting in any time soon, So If I'm Omar I pull the trigger fast, then trade Benson to KC for Mike MacDougal and whoever else. Thats just me.

I don't care if the Mets are spending money and I certainly wouldn't be upset with them for trying to improve their team since that's what they're supposed to do. I've seen several Zito-pitched games and a handful of Kris Benson and given that Benson will make 8 million next year and Zito will command at least 12 million annually, the deal makes no sense for the Mets. Benson was the slightly better pitcher in 2004 and Zito was only marginally better in 2005. I think you're judging Zito based soley on stats from 2002 and not watching the guy pitch and letting some comments from a player's wife cloud your judgement. Neither pitcher is an ace so it makes no sense for the Mets to pay Zito when they have Benson. If you're still clueless as to "how the Hell" I compared Benson and Zito in terms of ability I watched them pitch and looked at the numbers, which it seems like I've done a lot more than you have. And if it still makes no sense to you maybe you should be reading something like The Alphabet Book before you visit the forums.
