Loretta Traded to the Red Sox

There are no links yet, but the Padres have complete a trade that would send second basemen Mark Loretta to the Red Sox for catcher Doug Mirabelli.

Dumb. Also I hope Burroughs leads the league in hitting with Tampa Bay. The kid can hit for average. Padres get Dewon Brazelton (ugh).

Good trade for the Red Sox. I love Mirabelli but Shoppach will be fine as a backup to Varitek. Loretta/Cora is a good combo at 2B for next year.

We are just simply robbing teams this year.

I don't like the trade, but:

            1) Loretta is getting up there in age, he had a bad year last season.
            2) Loretta was going to get a lot of money, so the trade was to lose some of the salary.
            3) This could lead to either Barfield starting or the Padres signing Garciaparra.

I assume this was to clear salary so San Diego could sign Hoffman?

Only way it makes sense to me.

You are overvaluing Burroughs. He has never hit above .300 in a season, he shows no promise of hitting for power, let alone showing the consistency of hitting the ball all over the field instead of LF all the time.

                    Any reason?

So far we have traded a backup catcher, as well as 3 or 4 prospects, for an Ace pitcher or number two at the least, a set up man who 2 years ago was dominant, and 3-time All-Star third baseman and gold glover, and now a guy who has hit .314, .335, and .280 the last three years with a career AVG or 300 and a career .365 OBP at second base. You dont call that flat-out gun-point robbery?

Nope, because the thumb injury was the second major injury to the same thumb and that really zapped his power and what not. I'm really hoping for Loretta to rebound but when he came back he looked nothing like the guy in 2003 and the All-Star in 2004.

                          Regarding the World Series,

Play the games first. Some players look better on paper, but they still have to play the game.

Wasn't Loretta pretty much the Padres best player other than Giles? So they trade him for a backup catcher. I don't get it.

In 2004 he was, but last year he was hardly the second best player... maybe by default because so many people had bad seasons here last year.

You have to take into consideration his thumb injury back in May. He had surgury there and it was the second major injury to that finger. Like I said, he looked nothing like the guy in 2003 and the All-Star in 2004.

Just so you all know, I don't think this deal will be finalizeid pending on the Hoffman situation.
