Loretta Traded to the Red Sox
There are no links yet, but the Padres have complete a trade that would send second basemen Mark Loretta to the Red Sox for catcher Doug Mirabelli.Tags: None -

Good trade for the Red Sox. I love Mirabelli but Shoppach will be fine as a backup to Varitek. Loretta/Cora is a good combo at 2B for next year.Comment

1) Loretta is getting up there in age, he had a bad year last season.
2) Loretta was going to get a lot of money, so the trade was to lose some of the salary.
3) This could lead to either Barfield starting or the Padres signing Garciaparra.Last edited by BatsareBugs; 12-07-2005, 04:01 PM.Comment

So far we have traded a backup catcher, as well as 3 or 4 prospects, for an Ace pitcher or number two at the least, a set up man who 2 years ago was dominant, and 3-time All-Star third baseman and gold glover, and now a guy who has hit .314, .335, and .280 the last three years with a career AVG or 300 and a career .365 OBP at second base. You dont call that flat-out gun-point robbery?Comment

Regarding the World Series,
Play the games first. Some players look better on paper, but they still have to play the game.Last edited by BatsareBugs; 12-07-2005, 04:11 PM.Comment

Re: Loretta Traded to the Red Sox
Wasn't Loretta pretty much the Padres best player other than Giles? So they trade him for a backup catcher. I don't get it.Yankees
Cowboys

Re: Loretta Traded to the Red Sox
In 2004 he was, but last year he was hardly the second best player... maybe by default because so many people had bad seasons here last year.
You have to take into consideration his thumb injury back in May. He had surgury there and it was the second major injury to that finger. Like I said, he looked nothing like the guy in 2003 and the All-Star in 2004.
Just so you all know, I don't think this deal will be finalizeid pending on the Hoffman situation.Comment
