Re: Loretta Traded to the Red Sox

i wonder if there was more to the deal.. there was this rumor on MLB.com from today:

the Red Sox have been talking with the Padres about a trade that would send left-hander David Wells and catcher Doug Mirabelli to San Diego for infielder Mark Loretta and pitcher Akinori Otsuka.

Re: Loretta Traded to the Red Sox

Mirabelli is likely an MLB starting catcher. The Padres feel they will not re-sign Ramon Hernandez, so that might be their rationale for this trade.

On paper, this looks a little too good to be true for the Red Sox. I'm a little worried that the Padres might know something that the Sox don't about Loretta's thumb? Maybe not. Loretta was on my roto-team in 2004 (what a pick!), and absolutely rocked at 2B for me. Even if he doesn't reproduce that fantastic 2004, he should still be serviceable. I'm clueless re: his contract status, so I haven't analyzed that yet.
I just hope Shoppach can catch Wakefield...

He will make 3.75 mil next season, which is the last season of his contract. He is an insurance policy for Pedroia, and if it comes to it, he will switch to SS. If we trade Rent we now have a SS that can start and be productive. He has logged over 1000 innings at SS, so he is no stranger to it. Great deal for the sox.

GBrushTWood. This is Loretta's final year of his contract. I think he's slated to make a few millions this year. Anyways, there could be something with his thumb that hasn't been mentioned. As for Mirabelli, I think he'll be only a backup catcher or plan if Olivo fails to get the job done.

Hernandez really soured the Padres during the season when he made it known he'll be asking for Varitek-type money. The Padres deemed his demand too high which is why they didn't bother negotiating with him.

More likely, it's the other way around. I think its pretty clear they don't think Pedroia is ready for this year. They were either going to re-sign Graffanino or acquire somebody like Loretta.

Which is an incredibly smart move. Don't need to rush our best position player prospect.

Also you could move him back to SS for a year in AAA if they still want to trade Renteria.

                            Regarding the World Series,

Play the games first. Some players look better on paper, but they still have to play the game.
We don't need power from 2B in this type of lineup man, we need exactly what Loretta is.

And I didn't say we would win, but you simply said we won't. We are easily one of the top 5 favorites going into this year barring any huge injuries.

Loretta is perfect for our team. He turns the DP well, doesn't make many errors and is a patient hitter so will see a lot of pitches. At worst, he'll fit nicely into Bill Mueller's 8 spot.

Well in my opinion Mueller shouldn't have been hitting 8th, but with those past lineups we could do that. This year, especialy if we trade Manny for half the offensive player he was, the offense probably won't be as super-human as it has been. I'd say Loretta 2nd, Renteria 7th, maybe 8th considering who we get at 1st and if we keep Nixon. Obviously its too early for the lineups right now, but just some thought.
