At least Kendell knows his place in MLB is as a singles hitter. We have enough guys who hit HRs, so I'm totally fine with a singles hitter to bat 7th or 8th in the lineup. When Lieberthal played at the Vet, he was content to hit a very soft .320. But since moving to CBP, he's decided to swing for the fences on every occasion. The problem is that, outside of Endy Chavez, I can't think of anyone who has less pop in his bat than Lieberthal does. I wish he'd be happy with hitting a very soft .320, but he thinks he has power.

As for the trade, I refuse to believe that the best pitching value you can get for Abreu right now is Zito. Everyone knows we're trying to trade Abreu right now and we're seeing lowball offer after lowball offer. Right now, I'm content to run with what we've got unless we can get a bonafide #1 starter. And I'm not convinced Zito qualifies as that anymore.

Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

True, he definately knows he's an overpaid singles hitter. I just think he's past his prime right now (so is Lieberthal though). Catching has taken a toll on Kendall over the years from what I saw.

Another thing is that Kendall has to approve this trade. Something tells me that he won't want to leave his hometown in the West Coast. He always made a big deal of that in Pittsburgh.

        Your right.

Off the subject when is Hammels supposed to be in the bigs?

I think Liebrethal for Kendall is probably just a wash. They're basically the same player.

Hammels broke his hand pretty bad in a bar fight, IIRC. That set him back for better part of a season.

They are not the same player. Kendall is an on-base machine. Mike Lieberthal does not but try and hit homeruns.

Kendall still posted a solid OBP last year, whereas Lieberthal's was below-average yet again.

As for Hamels, he's also been sidelined with back issues.

What I was trying to say is at this point in their careers they both aren't going to produce much more in there careers.

Yeah, but at least Kendall can hit for average and get on base. Lieberthal is all pop flys. I'll still take Kendall waaayyyyyyyy over Lieberthal.

Actually, they weren't that far apart and both were below average. OBP last year:

                      Kendall: .345
                      Lieberthal: .336

                      BA/SLG last year:

                      Kendall: .271/.321 (horrid)
                      Lieberthal: .263/.418

It's just my opinion, but I think Kendall's best days are behind him. I also don't see him accepting a trade back to the East Coast, but that's just me.

                        See above. They both stink...

I'll agree that they both are are pretty bad, but what those stats don't tell you is that Leiby was the most unclutch player on the Phillies (thats saying a lot with David Bell on the team). Whenever he was up with men in scoring position he would either strike out, double play or short fly ball that wouldn't get a runner from 3rd home. Now I don't how Kendall was in the clutch because I didn't watch Oakland much, but Leiberthal blew so many scoring chances last year, especially when he was right behind Bell (basically 2 automatic outs), that I would have to believe Kendall is atleast slightly better. And that's not to mention that I think Leiberthal is pretty poor at handling pitchers.

Trading Zito would be stupid, unless you get a guy like Abreu. Really, when i looked @ this trade 1st i was like why? but now i get it.

                            1. Rich Harden 2. Estban Loiaza 3. Joe Blanton 4. Danny Haren 5. Gavin Floyd/Dan Meyer/Joe Kennedy/A signing-trade

CL Street with Witasak, J. Garcia, Duscherer, Cruz, Calero

                            Kotsay-Bradley-Abreu-Chavez-Big Hurt(*tear*)-Swisher-Crosby-Liberthal-Ellis

That team is in the playoffs in my opinion, with a fairly weak rotation...i think they need a David Wells type

They can have Wells....as long as we get one of those young pitchers that they have too many of in return.
