Roger Clemens Thread
I have mixed feelings about this one. I would hate rooting for this piece of **** again, but I can't deny he would be a huge addition to our pitching staff.
The Red Sox have communicated with Roger Clemens's agents, the Hendricks brothers, over the past few days to express their interest in the future Hall of Famer if he elects to play in 2006

Re: Roger Clemens Thread
Maybe it's because I wasn't a hardcore fan when he left the Red Sox, but I really don't care about why/when he left the team nearly 10 years ago. The fact is, adding him to the pitching staff makes them a better ballclub in 2006. For that reason, above all else, I hope they sign him. I can understand many people's bitterness towards him, but the only thing I really care about is winning games and ultimately, a championship. I don't look towards ballplayers as beacons of moral behavior and conduct, so I can accept that Clemens is a self-centered jerkstore. So what? He's a talented jerkstore.
I must also concede, it would absolutely be cool as hell to watch him pitch in Fenway Park for the Red Sox once again.
In addition, I don't see the Yankees possessing the ability to overpay him this time around. These are not the same Yankees as two years ago. There are, allegedly, real financial constraints at the moment that prevent them from going out and throwing money at free agents (example - Carlos Beltran). If Clemens ends up a Yankee again, I think it will be because he enjoys playing there, and not because they'll overpay him. -
Re: Roger Clemens Thread
I couldn't imagine him and Schilling on the same team.
There'd be some damn good locker-room arguements.
But he would be a huge addition. A healthy Schilling, Healthy Beckett and Clemens at the top of the roation? That'd put us as one of the best.Comment

I think acquiring Clemens makes a lot of sense, because, in addition to solidifying the rotation with a guy who absolutely makes us better, it provides the front office with the flexibility to trade either Matt Clement or Bronson Arroyo to Baltimore with Manny Ramirez for Miguel Tejada. </tinfoil>
Doing so doesn't leave a gaping roster hole in either the rotation or the bullpen with a Manny trade. I think this makes a lot more sense than many people will imagine at first...
I'd absolutely take Clemens + Tejada over Manny + Arroyo (or Manny + Clement). Of course, this leaves a gaping hole in LF...
One other thing: Isn't it great how the Red Sox are in every single juicy player rumor or transaction for the last 3 years? Starting with the Alex Rodriguez to Boston trade story, it seems like the Red Sox are at the center of everything. I guess that's the result of having a rabid fan base, lots of money to work with, and diligent ownership? It's never a dull day for Red Sox fans...Last edited by GBrushTWood; 12-11-2005, 11:55 AM.Comment

And I've heard, it's also been posted in another thread by someone else, that Marte might play LF at home if we trade Manny, as he wouldn't have any less range than Manny.Comment

I think the Red Sox leave him at 3B, which is where he's one of the 5 best prospects in baseball. I also think they leave him at Pawtucket to start the season, and in the event of injuries, call him up. OTOH, he seems to be major league ready, so he deserves to play. It's all fairly confusing given that they have both Youkilis and Lowell. I have no idea how they approach this, but I think trading Youkilis is the end result. But I'm getting off-topic here..

Re: Roger Clemens Thread
Marte was given a shot to play left in Winter ball last year, but that was scrapped after about a month.
He was willing to give it another shot, though. He made a reference to Miguel Cabrera, basically saying, "If he can do it, I can do it".
For whatever reason he was never given the chance to try again with the Braves. Schuerholz was adamant throughout the year that he would remain at 3rd... Probably because they figured that's where he had the most trade-value.
Maybe the Sox will try him at 1st, if the rumors about the elbow injury are true.Comment

Bill Lajoie was the one who said Marte would play LF.
In regards to Clemens, in the end I would love to have him because he would help us win games. My hatred for him will have to be put on hold I guess.Comment

And I think a lot of the "anti-clemens" sox fans might put their hatred on hold if he took the mound. They were classy enough to give him a stand ovation in what was supposed to be his last game at Fenway as a Yankee.Comment
