Re: D-Backs looking to ship Glaus to Jays or Red Sox

Just to clarify on an earlier post, when I said ODogg would be the best 2B for the next 10 years it was obviously hyperbole but he's going to be one of the best for the next 5-6 years defensively.

Anywho as for the Jays backup catcher problem, i'm still kinda hoping the Jays would sign Mike Piazza to an incentive laden contract and keep him around for a year or two as a DH/Catcher/1B guy. He'd bring some veteran leadership and a little pop in the bat.

With Glaus in the fold, I expect Hillenbrand to be dealt. You have to look around and see what teams are searching for a 3B and have payroll flexability. The Pirates fit the bill. And they Craig Wilson who can play RF and it looks like management has soured on him. The problem is that Wilson will probably make similar money to Hillenbrand next season.

But back to the Glaus trade, I like it.

Finding out O-Dog was going to be leaving the pound stinks. He basically had at least one web gem per game. He's well liked by his teammates and was heavily invovled with the community. IIRC he even personally called Paul Godfrey to say he didn't want to play anywhere else when his name came up in trade talks. He will be missed on and off the field. And who could forget his JP dresses like a pimp comment during his first season.

As for Miggy .... I wonder what happened to the crime novel he was writing.

The Jays needed a power bat. Glaus finished 11th in HR's last season while playing hurt. He is a legit 4 hole hitter. I imagine there's a good chance Wells will see better pitches to swing at next season. I hope Glaus is mainly the DH because Koskie is stronger at 3B.

I assume Hillenbrand will be dealt, so by losing him, you're losing a bat. I don't feel comfortable with Rios as the starting RF. I still believe that position needs to be addressed.

With JP aquiring 3 big long term contracts, he is rolling the dice. I would rather pay big money for a player like Glaus then to divide up the cash to get 2 lesser players like a Hillenbrand and Koskie.

The Jays are finally taking some risks. You will probably never take the next giant step unless you do this.

I can say the Jays today are a vastly better ballclub than the team that was fielded at the end of the regular season.

You forgot about Piazza opening a hair salon, or going into interior decorating.

                I kid.

But I haven't heard anything here in our Cleveland papers about Piazza.

Re: Glaus... He couldn't work on his upper body last season due to the injury. This is a guy who has 50 homerun power and has won a World Series MVP. It's not Dunn, but it's awfully close.

The Twins could use a 3rd baseman. I like Lew Ford. He had an OPS of .827 2 seasons ago. Last year he was average due to injury. I'd love to see if the Twins would like Koskie back. I like Shea and he's a versitile player.

But you say RF has to be adressed. What about Left? Is Cat needed? He is a lefty bat which is needed, but I still would rather keep Rios over Cat. There is no way we can add another outfielder without giving up on one of the guys we have now. I do however like the Cat/Reed platoon so that could make Rios expendable.

The Twins signed Batista to be their 3B but they don't have to pay his full salary if they cut him before the regular season starts. I don't see any team touching Koskie's contract. He was awful last season and he's injured every season. I think the Twins would be interested in Hillenbrand but I'm sure JP wants the logjam of 1B/3B to be cleared before ST.

Rios was the 2nd worst offensive starting RF in the AL last season only ahead of Sosa. The Cat/Reed platoon was actually pretty productive season despite not having any HR power.

Having Glaus in the line-up instead of Hillenbrand/Hinske softens the blow of Rios having around 500 AB's but I still don't think he should start. The catcher position also has me worried. Quiroz is stinking it up in Winter Ball right now. But the Jays basically have no choice to have him be the backup because he's out of options. If the Jays try to send him back to AAA he has to clear waivers and he will be claimed.

Here's the scouting report on Sergio Santos, the player we received in the deal...

Santos, who just two years ago was ranked by Baseball America as the organization's top prospect, was drafted out of high school by the Diamondbacks with their first pick in the 2002 draft. The 22-year-old had a steady rise through the system before stumbling a bit last year for Triple-A Tucson when he hit just .239 with 12 homers and 68 RBIs.

At 6-foot-2, 239 pounds, Santos is big for a shortstop, which has prompted speculation that he would eventually need to switch, but the Diamondbacks have been impressed with the way he's played at short. He became expendable, however when the club drafted shortstops with its first-round pick in each of the past two drafts. Stephen Drew, selected in 2004, is thought to be just about ready for the big leagues and the team drafted high school shortstop Justin Upton with the No. 1 overall pick last year. Upton has yet to sign, but the D-Backs are optimistic that they will reach a deal with him.

He'd likely move to outfield or 3rd base.

Hmm if Santos does well in AAA and maybe experiment him in the OF then he could be the future power bat in the OF for the Jays. He's still very young. Oh well we'll see.

I'm still excited about this deal for the Jays Luckily, 2006 isn't too far away now

We don't have room for Piazza on the Indians, we have Hafner as full time DH, Martinez as full time catcher, and Broussard at 1st, now of course if Piazza is signed only as a 1st basemen I could maybe see that working out, but otherwise it's doubtful.
