    Orioles acquire Patterson from Cubs

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2285777

    For two spare part prospects.

For once, a great move for the O's. Even if CPat flames out, it isn't like he's expensive or we gave much up for him. I think he'll be good for .280 with 15-25 HR.

They got nothing because they practically gave up nothing. Everyone and their grandmother knew the Cubs just wanted to dump Patterson, a guy who couldn't even stay on the MLB roster for the duration of the season.

I think the change of scenery will help Patterson a little and motivate him to improve his game. He'll get off to a solid start, but then regress back to his usual level of play for the rest of the season. I'm just glad he's finally been traded so I don't have to worry about seeing him in a Red Sox uniform.

I wouldnt have minded if the Red Sox gave up nothing to get him. I'm not a huge fan of Patterson but he is better than our current CF.

I don't know, both Adam Stern and "Player To Be Named Later" could make a strong argument against Patterson...

It could make the O's more likely to deal Matos, and that'd be a very good thing at this point.

I'd like for that to happen. Trade Matos for a pitcher, put Patterson in center, and Markakis or Majewski in left. If Patterson flops, bring up either Majewski or Markakis, whichever guy is still in AAA.

.280 seems a bit high for the hopeful average. I would bump it down more to around 260ish. The two seasons(2002 and 2004) he has played the whole year he has hit a combined .260 and averaged 19HR's and 63 RBI's. The year he hit .298 he only played in 83 games and had barely over 300 AB's. Any O's fan hoping for a .280 is going to be sorely dissappointed, considering in his 6 MLB seasons he has hit over .280 once and has a career average of .252.

Maybe he meant an on-base average of .280? Since thats probably all he'll be good for.

True that. The O's just must like taking on washed up free-swinging Cubs outfielders.

Patterson would be good with a change of scenary. I would know - I've watched him play since he came up from the minors. His biggest fault is impatience, and the Cubs hitting coaches are not very good. With that said, Patterson doesn't learn very quickly if at all, but the talent is still there.

Great move for the O's they pick up a player who if giving the playing time will hit 30 HR's and drive in 85 Runs.
Jim Hendry has offically won the worst Gm of the 05-06 offseason award. He gave up too much to get Pierre, he failed to get Furcal, and got nothing back in return for Patterson. Good job Jim! and thanks for us another Cubs fan a 70- 92 ballclub.

As a Cubs fan myself, I watched Patterson come up also.He swings at anything that's thrown his way. I had high hopes for him, but I think he's only 23 yrs old. Maybe a change of scenary will really help him out.

Orioles got a good deal here if someone could coach Patterson so doesn't make these mistakes.

As Candyman said, if they teach him plate discipline I think Patterson can still be a solid MLB player, but until then he's useless, unless you want a human air conditioner.
