    Doc signs 3yr/40 mil extension

    - I hate to go all Debbie Downer but I give this extension the thumbs down.
Doc has yet to stay healthy for a full season after he signed the big 4 year extension. Yes I understand last years injury was a fluke, but the bottom line is that he missed the full 2nd half last season. Doc’s prior deal had 2 years left. Doc has stated numerous times he wants to stay in Toronto and likes the direction of the club. There’s no harm in seeing how this upcoming season pans out for him. As you can tell, I also gave the thumbs down to the JP extension when he had 2 years left on his deal. What’s scary is how much money he will make in his last 2 seasons (14.25 mil and 15.75 mil). I have yet to see a study on what constitutes a starting pitchers “prime” years but I would venture to guess if you’re looking at a 5 year window, age 32 and 33 aren’t part of it (My guess are ages 26-30). I have a feeling this contract extension could come back to haunt the Jays, but I
    hope I’m dead wrong.

    - I also noticed Godfrey at the press conference said Doc was the premier pitcher in the AL. I would disagree with him. I believe Johan Santana is the ace of the AL. Over the next 5 seasons, I believe Santana will outperform Doc.

    - I’m curious to see what kind of deal Zito lands now after this season. He’ll probably get a salary between AJ’s and Doc’s. My guess right now is a 5yr/62.5 mil contract.

If I were Halladay, I would petition for a new nickname. As an elite pitcher, there is no way I would want any type of connection to the words "Doc" or "Doctor."

I think Halladay is the best right-handed pitcher not named Clemens in today's game. As for the AL's best pitcher, Santana would have something to say about that but Halladay is a different breed, he's a horse. He is deserving of the money pitchers are getting these days but I would have waited to see how he responds coming off of injury as the extension wasn't necessary right now.

Virtually no Jays fan or anybody associated with the Jays organization calls him Roy.

All his teammates, JP Ricarrdi (GM), John Gibbons (Managers), Paul Godrey (President), and the announcers call him Doc.

The nickname Doc is associated with Doc Holliday.
The announcers will also use Doc meaning doctor.

Yep Roy is called Doc all the time. I say its a good move, when healthy he's the 2nd best pitcher in the AL.

I also had no clue who you were talking about. Does that mean that I'm not important enough to hear this news? I know who Roy Halladay is, I enjoy watching him pitch, but because I don't know him by "Doc" I shouldn't be able to get this information? I'm confused here, because this is literally how I feel about it. I went to the website and started yelling aloud "THEN WHY DON'T YOU JUST CALL HIM ROY FRICKIN HALLADAY?!". I mean...I can pretty much guarantee you anywhere from 1-2/3rds of the people who read your statement had no clue who you were talking about. Had you added a "Halladay", well yeah. We get it. But just referencing him as "Doc" and only "Doc"? That's not even a proper use of grammar...and you can see why pretty damned blatantly in how people have responded to this....because nobody understands who you're talking about. The same way that you would say "MLB (Major League Baseball)" in a professional writing manner, you should do the same with nicknames that not many people know.

I don't mean to go off in a rant or get really mad or anything, but stuff like this where the writer goes out of their way either knowingly or unknowingly to segregate the reader, refusing to explain anything that different people from different places might not understand in the same way as them...well...it sticks in my craw.

Bad grammar is one thing....blatantly referring to the same person in the same underused manner over and over again without change....well...that's another.

As for the deal, I think it's definitely a great signing for the Jays. Halladay is a guy who, if handled properly (and the Jays seem to have done just that so far), could be a very good ace for the team and possible teams to come for a long time.

i think Doc's one helluva pitcher and IF he stays healthy is one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball.

I think its great that we have him locked up for longterm...he's a horse.

Does he get an orange jumpsuit with the contract like the other "Doc"? Huge baseball fan here, but had no idea Halladay was called "Doc", but congrats to him and the Blue Jay fans on his new contract.

What's that I hear????......Toronto raising ticket prices to cover the cost of all of their new contracts. Is there a doctor in the house?

Great pitcher but questionable signing with 2 years left in his current contract. If he can't stay healthy this deal could cripple the Jays financially during those last two years.

Easy there, people. I honestly had no idea that some of our friends south of the border had no clue that Halladay's nickname was Doc. North of the border, he's always referred to as just Doc or Doc Halladay, so I can see where Asianflow's coming from. No need to freak out, but it's not like this is some obscure nickname either.

I'd just like to say that I've been well aware of Halladay being nicknamed "Doc" for years now. :o
