MLB to celebrate if Bonds passes Aaron

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2387556

Thoughts? Personally I find it appalling and, in particular, I think it sends a terrible message to kids. But I guess, despite all of MLB's tough talk regarding the steroid problems facing the game, they'll turn a blind eye if a buck can be made off the accomplishments of a cheater.

It seems like MLB's hands are tied. It wasn't against the rules up until this point to use steroids.

I'd prefer they wouldn't celebrate, but they're between a rock and a hard place.

Yep so baseball rules has precedent over the law of the United States of America?

Anywho I find this sickening. I hope that if he does passes Aaron that it's at a visiting ballpark. I hope there's enough intelligent fans out there that would boo Bonds out of the building.

If by celebrate they mean put a nice little star next to any records he has/gets, than I'm perfectly fine with it.

Bonds is a hero in his own mind! Unfortunately for him, he's not fooling anyone.

The true single season Home-Run King is Roger Maris
The true lifetime Home-Run King is Hank Aaron

The real hero's are the men who hit the beaches at Normandy on D-Day!

Bonds would probably demand to sit out until he returned back home.

MLB is not in the position to take sides on their game.

Barry Bonds, either through cheating or talent, will have broken the all-time MLB homerun mark. That's cause for celebration.

Whether you think he's a steroid user or not actually has zero bearing on a player surpassing a record.

MLB is not Congress. Everything up to this point has either been leaked testimony that a writer claims he has or a book written by a couple of writers. Until there is further proof, MLB can not take the position that Barry Bonds was a steroid user. They have no choice but to identify him as a player that has broken the all-time record.

I mean, really is this a surprise? For people to complain about this is pretty silly. Did you really expect MLB to just say, "Screw you Bonds" in front of millions of people?

But even with that reason of doubt there, they are more than inclined to not have any festivities. It's not like Bonds can sue MLB because they didn't rightfully celebrate his accomplishments, be they tainted or not. The league does not have to do anything here, I think it would be a very bold statement if they were to totally downplay the whole ordeal. I mean, yeah, you can have Selig on hand, along with Aaron if he wishes to appear given the circumstances, and whomever you wish to have involved, but that doesn't mean that #756 has to be made a huge publicity event. Hell, probably the only thing even keeping them from not marketing it at all is the change they will be raking in from merchandising and advertising.

As much as people say "it'd be great if baseball took a stance against barry" it really wouldn't.

I'm sure to a certain degree, they are ashamed/embarassed that this whole thing is happening to one of the greatest records in sports. To not celebrate it though is going to be more eye-popping, media frenzying (i know, it's not a word) than anything they could do. The best way is to just have a little hoorah about it and then hope that ARod breaks the record in a few years.
