Senate Taxes Committee approved an amendment requiring a referendum in Hennepin County by a vote of 12-0.

The same committee votes today on whether to combine the Twins and Vikings stadium proposals together into one bill. The proposal would put in effect a 0.5 cent sales tax increase in the 7 metro counties and fund both the Twins and Vikings stadiums, as well as mass transit projects. The metro-wide tax increase would also add a retractable roof to a Twins stadium, while the Twins stadium bill passed by the House doesn't call for one.

Here's how the proposed metro tax increase compares to tax increases in the separate Twins and Vikings bills.

Twins bill --> 3 cents on $20 purchase (Hennepin County only)

Vikings bill --> 15 cents on $20 purchase (Anoka County only)

Combined Twins/Vikings bill --> 10 cents on $20 purchase (7 metro counties)

In a stinging setback for the Minnesota Twins, the Senate Taxes Committee voted unanimously Monday to give Hennepin County residents the right to vote on a sales tax to build a ballpark.

Well this is the same thing that has happened or prevented bills from coming about before. I don't have much faith in this passing.

If they dick around too much longer not only will the Twins leave, but the Vikings won't be far behind.

Update:

The Senate passed the above mentioned bill that uses a 0.5% metro-wide tax increase to build Twins and Vikings retractable roof stadiums, and fund mass transit projects.

Now a conference committee will have to be put together to come up with a compromise between the House and Senate bills.
