ESPN needs more of that kind of presentation these days IMO.
Yes and no. He was doing that schtick with the nicknames back then but it was relatively new. But over time he has become too big of a personality (even if only in the insulated world of Bristol, CT). In stead of doing a show, it seems he believes that he is the show. He is unpolished and he knows it and he tries to cover up his incompetencies with schtick...again, he makes himself the show. But I remember when they first started the Sunday Countdown with Tom Jackson and, youre right, he was much more tolerable...that is if you could tolerate the nicknames.

The only reason he was like that back then was because you couldn't break into the business by being a fool. Nowadays, it would be easy for the modern day Chris Berman to get a sports broadcasting gig in the same way Stephen A Smith and Stu Scott did - by being fools and having an act. But back in '85, you had to play it close to the vest and that's what Berman did.

The Berman you see now? That's the real Berman.

You're probably right. It's a wonder that he kept himself contained for as long as he did. I remember the early 90s and he was half conservative half loony. I miss those days. He wasn't so bad and the nicknames were somewhat original back then.

You're also right about acting like fools. It seems ESPN thinks personality=brash stupidity. The closest sports media personality to those at ESPN these days would be Howard Cossell but at least he had substance to him.

Chris Berman is brutal as no matter what he does. He's a cartoon character now, but that's the norm at ESPN. I liked him the first few years of the network, but he sucks now.

Re: Chris Berman as a baseball announcer?

Berman doing the home run derby is arguably the hardest thing to listen to in sports. He does that stupid "back, back, back!" every ..........single............ time.

                  It's too f'n brutal.

I had enough of this guy from the last All-Star game, I hope I never hear his voice again on any baseball broadcasts.

What happened to people like Dan Schulman and Dave O'Brien? O'Brien's pretty good. Oh, yeah and next weekend, FOX Saturday Game of the Week is back so we'll have to deal with Joe Buck and Dr. McCarver.

I believe he does Wednesday games on ESPN TV. He also does SNB on radio.

my favorite booth is Gary Thorne, Steve Stone, and Steve Phillips... it's great, especially when Stone rips into Phillips everytime a former Met that Phillips either cut or traded does something well... I was almost in tears yesterday listening to Thorne and Stone rip into Phillips about how terrible he was.

This is just an observation from conversations about announcers and commentators over the years... It seems that almost everyone you talk about, especially the well known ones, there is a negative reaction. Why is that? And for those of you who think Chris Berman or John Madden or whoever else is "awful," who, in your eyes, is a "great" commentator/announcer and what makes him/her so?
