Yeah, they could've gotten away with one of them being out. Between Bernie, Cabrera and Crosby I think they could have filled in, but with both out their lineup takes a significant hit.

I think that Bernie/Damon/Matsui is a worse defensive outfield than Bernie/Damon/Crosby. Matsui is a bad defensive player.

Losing Matsui's bat will hurt, especially with Sheffield out, but once Sheffield is back we'll be ok. I'd give Bubba and Melky a shot. If they can play pretty good defense and not be an automatic out on offense, we'll be ok. If they don't get it done they'll have to get somebody, but I would not go out and give up the few good prospects we have for a Hunter or Soriano.

I agree we can lose 1 big bat but not 2. As long as the Sheff injury is nothing serious no need to go out and get someone.

It's May, so the Yankees can afford to go a month or so (assuming Sheffield comes back relatively soon) with what they have and use it as an evaluation period, so to speak. However, we are talking about the Yankees here and young guys usually get about 2 games to prove themselves before the front office hits the panic button.

"Due to this injury, I feel very sorry and, at the same time, very disappointed to have let my teammates down," Matsui said in a statement. "I will do my best to fully recover and return to the field to help my team once again. I would like to thank Joe Torre from the bottom of my heart for having been considerate of my consecutive games played streak these past several years and for placing me in the lineup every day."

Don't count on a quick a return by Sheffield, the Yankees have scheduled another MRI for Sheffield on monday.

Torii Hunter is not going to be a Yankee anytime soon. The Twins are not going to trade him this early in the season and the Yankees don't have the prospects it would take to get him. Other names that have been floating around are Ken Griffey Jr. and Austin Kearns and the Reds are not likely to trade either of them while they are winning.

Matt Stairs, Reggie Sanders, Matt Lawton, Larry Bigbie, those are the players the Yankees are likely going to able to get at this point in the season. If i had to choose i would take Matt Stairs, Stairs can play both corner OF spots as well as 1B and DH, has power and would take advantage of the short porch in RF and would give the Yankees the veteran bench help (if and when everyone is healthy) that they lost when Ruben Sierra left.

Stairs is a horrid fielder, I think they should target Sanders. Seems like they could get him for very little and Sanders would likely love the chance to play in New York.

Sanders wouldn't be a bad bet, the Royals would probably give us to him for basically nothing as they signed him to a 2 year deal and he would be a very serviceable stopgap.

The rest of those guys all pretty much suck though and are no better than what we already have in Melky.

Cashman said on the FAN today that there is no concern that Sheffield's injury is that serious. He didn't know for sure how long it would be, but he sounded very optimistic, and said Sheffield already had 2 MRI's, and surgery has been ruled out for awhile.

Man, Matsui is a friggin' tough guy, though... He snaps his wrist missing the ball, then goes to get it with his arm flapping around and tosses the ball back to the infield. His immediate reaction is to maintain his composure. Damn. I'd of pissed myself.
