I'm still not sure how Biggio is in 2nd over Jose Castillo of the Pirates.

Utley should be #1, but I think Castillo should pull #2 based on production. I guess Biggio is the sentimental favorite.

man... I just wish they would go with player voting for the baseball all-star game like they do with the NFL... it would be so much better that way.

There is no reason for Robinson Cano to be leading all AL 2nd basemen in allstar votes.........

Cano has the highest batting avg of 2nd basemen in baseball and the 2nd highest OPS in the AL. I think it's a bit of a strech to say there's no reason he should be leading 2nd basemen in votes.

            Why not?

There are a bunch of guys you can make a case for at 2nd base, and Cano is one of them.

Right now, the only spot that is completely rediculous is Varitek leading the catcher voting, and I'd say there are a bunch of guys much more deserving than Ichiro too. All the other positions you could make a good case for who's starting.

The AL outfield is crowded. Ichiro is among the league leaders in batting average so it's hard to say he doesn't belong. The AL catcher spot is also crowded (though with Joe Mauer clearly leading the way for the starter spot) but it is clear that Varitek should not be the starter, or even an All-Star.

Re: 2006 All Star Game: NL vs Red Sox and Yankees?

On-line voting ends tonight. This is my final ballot:

1b - Jim Thome, Albert Pujols
2b - Mark Loretta, Dan Uggla
3b - Mike Lowell, Miguel Cabrera
ss - Miguel Tejada, Jose Reyes
C - Joe Mauer, Brian McCann
OF - Manny Ramirez, Jason Bay
OF - Vernon Wells, Carlos Beltran
OF - Jermaine Dye, Matt Holiday

My AL choices for second and third are partially homer picks. No one is running away with it at either position so in a close race I went with my favorite players. Glaus leads third in homers, but he's hitting below .250. ARod has 16 but he leads the position in errors. Lowell leads in hitting and has played great D and I feel he is deserving oh some recognition for his bounce-back year. Loretta's D has been great all year and if not for April he'd be hitting about .360 right now (.218 in April, .404 in May, .323 in June). The AL outfield is really bunched in, so I just went with the OPS leaders. In truth, almost every AL team has at least one outfielder deserving of an All-Star selection.

In the NL, second base was close but Uggla gets the start in my opinion over Utley. He has fewer homeruns but bests Utley in almost everything else. The same with Cabrera over Wright. Wright has better power numbers, but Cabrera has better everything else. The rest of the selections were pretty easy. I didn't vote for Soriano because he even though he is at the top in homers, his other numbers are pretty unspectacular (10th among NL outfielders in OPS, 6th in SLG). Bill Hall needs to find a way onto this team.

Just got a call from my Dad. Somehow he got All Star Tickets. So looks like I'm going to the game. I need to buy a digital camera for my trip to Mexico in August so I'm going to try to get one before the game so I can take some pictures and hopefully upload them here.
