I honestly don't believe we will see Mazzone's results until 07-08. He isn't a pitching coach who fixes problems overnight. He puts his views and beliefs into an organization and allows the younger guys to grow into his mold. Pitching low and away with your fastball may be the single hardest thing to do on a consistent basis as a pitcher, and that is his first rule of pitching.

I truly believe that our rotation will look like this next year:

    Cabrera
    Bedard
    Benson
    Loewen
    Penn

And I think it will be top 10 in the majors...am I a bit of a homer? Possibly, but I believe Mazzone's full effect will be realized next year.

I think it's definitely possible, but I too might be homering on that one. If Bedard can get back to his April form, I think he's going to be our true ace, with Daniel right behind him. I also expect Loewen to have a 20 win season, Penn to bust, and one of Garrett Olson/Radhames Liz/Brandon Erbe to take his place in 2008.

The same stuff people are saying about Cabrera right now is the same EXACT things people were saying about Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan. Will he turn out as good as them? Probably not, but I think he will squeeze out a couple of awards by the time he is done.

It's VERY good. He throws a 96-100 MPH fastball with movement, a ridiculous curveball that he should use a lot more than he does. His slider is good also. He's also been experimenting with a changeup, which would make him even more dangerous. He has some of the best stuff in baseball easily.

              Your kidding right?

His control problems, with pressure on? Bad idea.

Credit to him though, he's gotten himself into situations where there are guys on 2nd and 3rd, a guy on 3rd, or bases loaded, and got out of it with no runs allowed. I remember a game earlier against the Twins I believe where he got the bases loaded with 0 out, struck out 2 guys and got a pop out. He seems like he stays composed in those situations, it's just when he does happen to give up a run he gets pissed and goes crazy.

I think we'll begin to see real results after the all-star break.
Admittedly, I'm one who doesn't think very highly of coaches/managers in general. I just feel at the MLB level they really don't make that much of a difference. So my view is based in part on that theory.

I actually don't disagree wholeheartedly, but I think Leo Mazzone is one of the few exceptions in the game. People thought this guy was crazy 10 years ago when he had all his pitchers throwing every day. There are a few people in and around the game that just bring something different, whether it be in philosophy or technique. And in a game where there's such a middle ground of people who say the same things and think the same way (look at how big of an impact Moneyball made as a result of stagnant thinking), there's plenty of room for people to stand out and make a difference with talented players looking to improve or reach their potential.

You make a valid point. I think talent trumps all, but when that talent isn't being used to it's fullest capability, then that's where I think a good coach/manager can come in handy.

Cabrera could be a good example of not using his talent to the fullest capability. Maybe a guy like Mazzone can bring it out of him?
