Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Exactly. One reason why I can't praise Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, or Hank Aaron.

By the way, since everybody's doing bench stuff, I very much needed room for Ken Griffey Jr. and Eric Karros (I'm actually going to replace them for their position... guys). So, I'm editing.

Am I missing something here? I've been a Padre fan my whole life and have never heard one bad thing said about Hoffy. There may be a ton a of stat geeks that don;t think he's all that, but as far as I know his teammates have never had an issue with the guy, nor have the fans.

Nevin, yes...Garvey, yes...Sheffield, yes...Brown, yes...Boone, yes, and even Henderson got on people's nerves in San Diego, but never Trevor.

Kind of scary how many Padres you have on your list.

Well, Tony Gwynn is on my favourites list. I have nothing against the Padres per se.

Regarding Hoffman, it's a personal petty grudge of mine (the below is a copy of my post from the All-Star Game thread)...

Gotta admit, I thoroughly enjoyed Hoffman's choke job.

My apologies if this story sounds like name-dropping, but I thought somebody might get a kick out of it:

My first year at EA (1999), I was lucky enough to be sent to Boston to work the All-Star Fan Fest. Got tickets to the game, the HR Derby (nearly caught a Burnitz HR in the short porch), showed Thome how to play our game, got to bust Harold Reynolds' chops, had a surreal encounter with Bernie Brewer, it was a pretty sweet deal.

One of the perks was an invite to the ESPN/MLBPA All-Star gala. Met a couple HOF'ers (Paul Molitor, Rollie Fingers), got to talk to a few players, most of whom were quite friendly. Not Hoffman. He was standing next to Kevin Millwood (who was signing autographs and chatting with people), talking with no one, drink in hand, looking surly, and curtly refusing autograph requests: "Forget it. Not signing tonight." Bear in mind that this shindig was pretty much set up for the sponsors, and everyone else that I saw was very polite. Even Millwood would kind of give him a "WTF?" look when Hoffman would refuse people.

A few hours later, the event was closing, and I was somewhat soused, shuffling back to the shuttlebuses that would take us to our hotel. These two guys were walking beside me, and one asked how I liked the event. I said it was great, all the players were great, except for Hoffman, who was a dink. They both laughed, and one said, "Yeah, that sounds about right." I turned to take a close look at these guys (I hadn't really been paying attention), and noticed it was Jeff Bagwell and Luis Gonzalez I was walking with. Hilarious.

So, who knows, maybe Hoffman was just having a bad night and is really the greatest guy in the world, but I've nursed a semi-grudge against him since that night.

I'm sure you can find a story like that about every guy in baseball. Jack Clark used to say Tony Gwynn wasn't a team player because all he cared about was getting his hits. According to Clark, if the Pads lost Gwynn would be okay as long as he got a knock or three. As we all know, Tony is baseball in San Diego, yet he's far from bulletproof.

True, but Hoffman's the only one I've seen be a jerk first-hand. Guess you had to be there. *shrugs*
