    What record goes down first?

This was on ESPN.com's front page, and I thought it'd be interesting to see what people thought would be broken first, if at all. DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak or Orel Hershiser's 59 scoreless inning streak.

IMO, it is the scoreless inning streak, as I could see some reliever doing it at some point. Obviously that wouldn't be as impressive, but seems much more likely to me than someone going 2 months getting a hit every game.

I agree with you about some reliever breaking Hershiser's record. I don't think D's hit streak will ever be broke.

Re: What record goes down first?

Relievers are used so much that they're prone to have a bad night somewhere down the road so I don't see that record being broken anytime soon.

Dimaggio's hitting streak has been challenged many times but I just can't see anyone breaking it. I think Utley will get to 42 games or something like that tho.

In effect, I think neither record will be broken in the next 50 years.

Joe D's hitting streak is the most unbreakable single season record in sports, IMO.

            Nah,

Johnny Vander Meer's back to back No-Hitters in one season will NEVER be broken.

              Easily Orel's.

If anyone gets to 50 games, the pitchers just won't give him anything to hit.

Yeah but if he's walked 4 straight times it wouldn't count because he'd still be 0 for 0

                  Really? I didn't know that....

But still, when someone is at 50 games, they will be pressing so hard to get a hit.

I dunno, I think if someone got real close, like 50 games or so, the pitchers wouldn't exactly make it hard on the hitters. Look at McGwire, they were serving some of those up on a platter for him, smiling as it went sailing over even.
If someone does break it, it'll be 60+ games.

There's so much luck involved with each one that I don't see either being broken.

The big picture to look at is this, and helped with my decision...

If Orel Hershiser could pitch 59 consecutive scoreless innings, I see a few pitchers being able to challenge that. Hershiser was a great pitcher... but not one of the best.

If Joe DiMaggio could hit safely in 56 consecutive games, then... ummm... hmmm... he was a great hitter. Not many like him.

                          Orel's record goes down first.

Doesn't matter. It is a 56 game hitting streak. He can have all the unofficial at-bats for 10 straight games, but he still went without a hit in those 10 games. Games in which the record book will say that he played in. Dimaggio had a hit in 56 straight games.

My guess is that the scoreless innings pitched streak is broken first, but I think we'll see both fall in our lifetime.
