I agree that players such as Beltran should not be in the discussion.

Will someone please explain to me how the hell Morneau ISN'T Comeback player of the year?

      2004 -.271 avg w/ 19 homers
      2005 - .239 w/ 22 homers
      2006 - .319, 32 homers, first time w/ over 100 RBIs

.....and yet Thome and Nomar, one of which seemed to be perpetually injured all damn year, the other which just got injured...they deserve comeback player of the year? Give me a break. I'm not even a twins fan, and I certainly was never a big fan of Morneau's, and even I can tell this is BS.

        Re: Comeback player discussion

Morneau had never really had a great season before this one. I'd classify his season as a break out one, not a comeback one.

I'll go with Thome and Rolen. Both guys were coming back from major injuries and no one knew what to really expect. There are a ton of candidates though. I didn't pick Schilling or Beltran because this is what I expected out of them and Nomar has been solid this year but he's been injured a lot.

Players like Beltran shouldn't be included in this disscusion for two reasons.

          1. He was expected to play at this level, as he showed in KC/Houston.

          2. The award is reserved for TRULY surprise players. No, not the kind recovering from down years when we already know their potential, but the unexpected players.

Your criteria would change the award from "comeback player" to "breakthrough player". They're two different kettles of fish here.

So blame the players for getting injured on the field?

If anything, it might be even harder to play at a top level considering your not playing 100% healthy.

Umm... Frank Thomas? The guy has been going absolutely nuts.

EDIT: funny how as I post this, he just ripped a homer against the Sox

Frank Thomas played is 108th game tonight, he played 108 games in 2004 and 2005 COMBINED! Oh he also hit his 28th HR to tie him with Nick Swisher (who also hit one tonight) for the team lead. Next closest on the team, Eric Chavez has 16. 16 Home Runs! Frank and Swish are carrying the A's. Frank is also leading the A's with 78 RBIs.

What comeback did Beltran make? Oh wait, finally playing like the $120-million-paid-player that he is?

In 2004 he got MVP votes and was a huge cog for the Houston Astros.

Now here are his 2005 numbers

                        .266 AVG .330 OBP .414 SLG

                        16 HRs 78 RBI

                        17 SB 6 CS

Now let's look at this year shall we?

                        .286 AVG .389 OBP .631 SLG

                        38 HRs 108 RBI

                        16 SB 3 CS

He's also being talked about as a candidate for the NL MVP this year.

I think he's a strong candidate for comeback player of the year.

Again, one of the richest players in baseball should be playing on a superstar level. I'd consider him borderline in proportion to his talent and contract. My guess is he'll take home the MVP, which is the real award he should be winning.

You say he's making a comeback, I say he's satisfying expectations and is playing on the level he should be. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Oh wait... He played injured most of 2005.

                            THAT'S why.

Now that he's healthy, his putting MVP numbers.

But I'd still give the nod to Nomar in the NL.

I agreee with an article from Sporting News about Comeback Player awards, it reads:

" A player should be required to have spent a significant chunk(40 games?) of his previous season on the DL to even be considered for Comeback Player of the Year."

And I agree which is why Beltran doesn't get me vote. My vote goes to Nomar and Thome or Thomas.

He may have been injured, but as the poster above mentioned, he didn't miss significant time. He still played in over 150+ games last year.
