    Hall of Fame Voting

Carter and Murray deserved to make it.

I didn't expect Sandberg to make it this time but I was suprised that he received less than 50%. He is definitely a top 10 second basemen, and possibly a top 5. Oh well.

Yah I am not sure what to think about Dale Murphy, Jim Rice and Andre Dawson, they were definitely some of the best players of their generation and are better than a lot of guys in the HOF. I know they would be in my HOF, but partly because they are guys I grew up watching and were the stars of that era.

Yup.... Dale's .265 career average isn't helping him much, but he has numbers that are on par with other hall of famers... I hate to say it, but I doubt he'll ever get in.

I'm kinda surprised that Carter made it in and Sandberg didn't.

It was Carter's 6th year, what I don't get is if you are a writer and you didn't think he deserved it the last 5 years, why is he more worthy now? He should have been in already, he was basically the best catcher of his era. I am sure Sandberg will make it, since some writers refuse to vote for people in there first year, His support should just go up each year like Carter.

When Murphy was great he was great but the beginning of his career and the end of his career really hurt him,

Who are they comparing these people to? I have no respect for the Hall of Fame, and haven't for a few years. They aren't comparing people to others in their era, which in my opinion, is a joke. Sandberg should have gone in today. He was the best 2nd baseman of the 80s. Carter should have gone in earlier. He was one of the 2 best catchers of his era. Dale Murphy and Andre Dawson were 2 of the top 5 players during the 80s, but they're not being compared to their peers, they're being compared to today's hitters. That is ridiculous. Jason Stark did a nice article on that today.
            ESPN

What kills me is that Murphy's total is actually going down by leaps and bounds every year. There's no way he'll get in if that continues . It pains me to say it, but I've given up hope. Dawson and Sandberg will get in eventually, but Murphy won't. Shoot, Jack Morris gets way more respect than Murphy and he wasn't even close to the 300 win plateau. He is remembered mostly for playoff performances, and yet he gets way more support than Murphy. Murphy played on crappy teams his entire career. He had Andres Thomas and Claudell Washington hitting in front of him most of it. If that doesn't speak about his RBI possibilities, I don't know what does.

I can only hope that the Veterans Committee votes him in someday.

              Good points Casey,

Those guys from the 70's and 80's get compared to guys from the past and guys from today, when they should really be compared against their era. Plus in Sandbergs case they should be compared offensively against guys who played their position and I don't think a lot of the sportwriters are even smart enough to that.

                Or how about Goose Gossage...

One of the pioneers of the releiver and closer.

A way of paying tribute... I was saddened by his loss, but not enough to leap frog him ahead of Dale Murphy into the hall. Kyle should not be on the ballot at all next year... it was a nice thing to do for all his friends and family this year, but they should leave it alone in upcoming votes.

yeah, tragic loss. But that shouldn't have a role in who is on the ballot.

Yes and when you consider that Phil Rizzuto is in the Hall of Fame it makes your point that much more valid. His lifetime BA was in the 270s I think, he had solid glovework {not Oz Smith and not even better than contemproaries), he wasnt a run producer yet hes in the Hall of Fame. The simple reasons are that he was on those Yankees teams and also he works in the media so he has the advantage of being visible.

I just can't buy into Gary Carter in the Hall of Fame. He was a good catcher who went into broadcasting and made a bunch of friends in the media -- now he's in.

The Hall of Fame folks! Not the Good Ballplayer Place. Andre Dawson, Jim Rice, GaryCarter were all good ball players.

But I don't think Carter was ever feared like Dawson and Rice were. He just does not belong.

Carter was very good, You have to compare his stats to other catchers, not outfielders and he was a pretty good defensive catcher. He was like a 10 time all-star, one of the best power hitting catchers of all time.

Also Carter never was and still isn't very well liked in the media they always saw him as a self promoter, so i don't think being in the media helped in his case.
