My apologies then, It truly sucks as the only time I really got to watch him pitch was when he got knocked around in Detroit and it was determined afterwards that he had an injury. So I feel jilted that I never saw the kid perform at his best.

I seriously hope he does recover from these problems but that 1-2 punch of Santana and Liriano is gonna scare a lot of teams for years to come if Liriano gets out of this rough patch successfully.

Yeah, he def wasn't rushed into the starting role, I do think that he may have been rushed coming back from inj. With a player like him, and your team playing well, why risk bringing him in. They could've used that extra time and gave him some more rest and maybe give him a relief appearance in the last 2 games to have him ready for the post-season, if the Twins hold on. Oh well, to late now. Hopefully he makes a full recovery, guy was the best pitcher in baseball before he went down.

It's a shame he tried to come back so soon. I really hope he didn't ruin his chances of being effective down the road, it's a pleasure to watch the guy pitch.

The thing I think everyone who is saying they rushed him back too quickly is missing is that they didnt just all of a sudden throw him out there to pitch. He had a simulated scrimage over a week ago and also made a rehab start at AAA Rochester before making the start Wednesday. They have been overly cautious with Liriano knowing all to well how prized his left arm is. Injuries happen, its nothing new. When he says he is pain free, and the doctors say he is ready to go and he has already thrown in a game (even though it was in the minors) you cant fault anyone.

To those that said they have not had the opportunity to see him throw... The best way I can describe it is watch how Santana is throwing at this point of the season(which is dominant). Liriano was even MORE dominant against hitters in June then Santana is right now. Liriano single handedly jump started the Twins run. Once he was inserted into the starting rotation in late may is when the Twins started to turn things around as he was by far the most consistent pitcher on the staff.

Jeff Brantley just gave his thoughts on it, I know he is jsut assuming but he said he thinks it could be an ligament tear(he gave the name of it, can't remember) and he said it could possibly be 18-24 months. THat is crazy, hopefully this is not the case.

I think he'll be alright, it'd be a shame to see someone with that much incredible talent have his career stunted because of an injury.

My guess is that he'll probably have TJ surgery and come back like a bull in a year and a half or so.

It'll suck to be without him, but the recovery rate is pretty much bulletproof with that procedure. Not to mention alot of pitchers come back even better afterward.

Damn, hopefully it isn't too bad, but it said that he heard a pop, which can never be a good thing.

Looking ahead to next season the Twins probably won't have Liriano at all and Brad Radke is set to retire after this season the Twins may actually have to try and be players in the offseason to try and acquire starting pitching.

It is a shame about Liriano though. Hopefully he bounces back and can build on the promising career he started this season.

More like 2 full seasons. It usually takes a pitcher 2 seasons before they're back to their usual self. Liriano's out pitch is a slider I think, which puts a lot of stress on the arm normally so he may have to start relying on his other stuff while he's rehabbing or he'll never get fully better.

Twins won't have to be players in free agency. I believe Silva will gain his stuff from 2005, Matt Garaz with an offseason and spring training to work getting change up over, Bonser is starting to look like he belongs the same with Scott Baker.

Re: Liriano leaves game in 3rd inning

The official website of the Minnesota Twins with the most up-to-date information on news, tickets, schedule, stadium, roster, rumors, scores, and stats.

MINNEAPOLIS -- A collective sigh of relief could be heard around Minnesota with the news Thursday that Francisco Liriano's arm injury may not be as bad as everyone feared.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan, traveling with the team in Cleveland, said the MRI taken on Liriano's arm showed no new structural damage to his left elbow.

"The MRI is fine, structurally it's fine and the ligament is fine," Ryan said.

At this point, Ryan doesn't think Liriano will need surgery, but said, "I'm not going to tell you that's not a possibility. It could be. That hasn't been determined. Not much has been determined yet."

The results of the MRI were very similar to the one Lirano took in early August, showing a mild tear of his ulnar collateral ligament. But a second opinion for the 22-year-old has not been ruled out.

The left-hander will not travel with the team the rest of the regular season.

"It's sore today," Ryan said. "It's tender like you would expect. What we want to do is calm it down for a week before we take the next step."

Liriano, 12-3 with a 2.19 ERA before the injury first sidelined him on Aug. 8, will not pitch again this season and has begun a rehabilitation program to try and get him ready for the start of the 2007 campaign.

Even if the Twins make the make the '06 playoffs, they won't rush Liriano back.

"We're not going to take any chances," Ryan said. "He's pretty good. We're going to fix this and get him ready for his future. ... We're in a good spot. He helped us get here. Let's not be short-sighted. We want to get him right for '07 and throw 200 innings [next season] rather than have him ready for a playoff game."

The Twins rookie All-Star left his first start since coming off the disabled list in the third inning of Wednesday's game against the A's after throwing just 28 pitches. Liriano came awkwardly out of his pitching motion while throwing a fastball to A's outfielder Bobby Kielty, and immediately Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and assistant trainer Dave Pruemer ran out to the mound to check on the pitcher. Liriano was taken out of the game and later said he heard a "pop" in his elbow when throwing a slider to Nick Swisher a few pitches earlier.

Due to his description of the injury, speculation began immediately as to whether Liriano might need ligament reconstruction surgery, commonly known as Tommy John surgery. Pitchers generally need 12-18 months to rehabilitate from that type of surgery.

Ryan said Twins doctors aren't sure what is causing the pain Liriano is experiencing.

"That's the problem," he said. "There's a lot of mystery why this happened in the first place and why it happened again."

Ryan isn't buying the talk that the Twins rushed Liriano back too quickly.

"We treated him with kid gloves, like we should have," he said. "I think we treated it more conservatively than aggressively. I don't think anybody anticipated this would happen after he went through his therapy and his rehab and pitched at [Triple-A Rochester]. I think we took the correct approach, and I don't think we'd change anything we did."

With the latest news that no greater structural damage has been found, the chances of Liriano being ready for next season appear to be much greater.
Great news for the Twins if he doesn't need surgery.
