A player that hires Boras is likely under the impression that their input is nearly null unless they tell Boras that they'll sign for so-and-so team for a bit less.

Boras handles it all and gets his people money. Matsuzaka is supposed to be the best pitcher ever coming out of Japan. He's getting top-flight money or he'll pitch in Japan next year.

From what I've read, it looks like the Red Sox are trying to treat him like Ted Lilly and you have to know that Boras disagrees mightily.

Boras is a disease to the game of baseball...

sooner or later, his hostage taking is going to backfire, but not before he's rich enough to buy the NL West.

IMHO, this will not get done. Maybe that's the pessimist in me, but I have to laugh when I read the fanboy posts on SOSH giving their pseudo-intellectual explanations about game theory, posturing, and all of these textbook negotiation terms while proclaiming both sides have too much to lose by not getting it done.

To me, the most important fact here is that the sides are apparently very far apart and it is unlikely they will come to terms. No amount of posturing and gamesmanship changes that.

If baseball was smart they would adjust the posting system and allow the current owner of K-Mat's contract to accept the second highest bid for another 30 days and so on and so on.

It would be in the best interests of the game and force teams to negotiate in good faith.

Then again, it would also give the player and the agent a lot more leverage.

That would not be in the best interests of the game... It would make the player essentially a free agent that can go to any team on his list as long as he holds out long enough. The redsox are negotiating in good faith. You can't spend $96M on a pitcher that you will only have for 3 years. I'm sure their offer would increase if Boras would entertain a 5 year deal, I'm sure their number would be much more towards where Bor(***) stands.

people keep saying... Well then they shouldn't have posted that much... Well the money isn't the issue, the length is. I'm sorry, but if Boras will only sign a 3 year contract... he is gonna take far less than market value because of how much it costs just to negotiate with him. Bor(***) has NO leverage. The Lions don't want matsu back, they want their $51.1M!!! If he thinks he can take him back to Japan and not be blackballed by every player in that country, he is nuts.

This deal will get done... Somewhere in the 4yr/$50 or 5yr/$65...

15 mil a year for a guy who hasn't done anything yet. I don't blame the Red Sox.

Done deal? So much for 20 mill./y Boras was asking for. BTW, if the Red Sox don't sign this guy, Bud Selig will bring up contempt charges and offer the guy up to the second highest bidder, whether it be the Mets or the Yankees. This has already been established.

Yeah coming from a Yankees fan. What the hell does that have to do with anything? I said I don't blame them for not wanting to pay an unproven pitcher 15 million dollars. Never did I mention the Yankees or any of the moves they have made recently.

                        Interesting perspective...

It’s the cops again. This time, they’ve got a warrant. You’ve flushed the heroin, buried the bodies, and, hey, she said she was 21 and how could you have known her real age? You are under arrest anyway, charged with gambling and bookmaking. You are a fantasy leaguer. Now that you’ve hired me as your […]

I think in truth, they felt like they could get Matsuzaka for 9 or 10 million a year and have him under their control for 6 years. They probably assumed (like everyone) that Boras would have no leverage in this scenario but obviously they were wrong.

Not likely. If these negotiations fail, it will be Boras fault, not the Red Sox.

From what Gammons is saying, Boras would prefer to keep him in Japan until 2008 and shoot for a 7 year $140 mil deal. I find this strategy interesting though, since Matsuzaka threatened to sit if Seibu didn't post him. The guy wants to be in MLB, but apparently money is more important.

This is sad. I was really looking forward to seeing what the guy had this season. If Matsuzaka continues to pitch in Japan for a few more seasons, and then makes his way over to the States, will it be safe to say that we won't see him in his prime against premier competition?
