J.D. Drew opts out of contract

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder J.D. Drew opted out of the final three years of his contract Thursday, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Drew, who turns 31 on Saturday, hit .283 with 20 homers and 100 RBI last season -- his second with the Dodgers. He signed a five-year, $55 million contract Dec. 23, 2004, and had been guaranteed $33 million over the next three years with Los Angeles.

Drew was limited to 72 games in his first year with Los Angeles by injuries, hitting .286 with 15 homers and 36 RBI. Previously, he played with St. Louis from 1998-2003 and with Atlanta in 2004, where he batted a career-best .305 with 31 homers and 93 RBI.

This was probably a move urged by Scott Boras. I don't think he can get the same amount of money but more power to him I guess.

        Teams are swimming in cash.

Drew will easily top the 3yrs/33mil left on his contract.

There will probably be around 5-10 teams bidding for him. I could see Drew getting a 4yr/50 million dollar contract.

The Red Sox should do all they can to get him.

couple things I've read and heard are that the Cubs could be a possible suitor for Drew to play CF. Don't really put much stock into it...but I have heard this on local radio stations

Good riddance J.D. Drew. I don't know how in the world anyone would want to overpay for him considering his meagar statistics.

              what a moron.

Why would an average ball player opt out of the last three years of a contract that would have paid him almost 33 million dollars?

I sure hope he doesnt get injured during the off-season.. That would really suck for him.

Here's someone I'd like to see the Sox throw some money at.

Not really because I am in love with his skills, but he does play a good defensive outfield, and can really hit when healthy. Probably the most complete free agent outfielder on the market.

Because he's not an average ballplayer?

Supposedly he was unhappy in L.A...

He's a damn good player, I'm certain some team will give him close to what the Dodgers owed him. Perhaps even more.

Re: J.D. Drew opts out of contract

As with any other available player, Drew raises interesting risk / reward questions. The production from Drew is apparently not an issue here, but from what I have been reading, Drew's personality is. Based on the thread about him at SOSH, he has been characterized as a Garciaparra-esque introvert who will not provide much of a clubhouse presence. He could even be a potentially negative clubhouse presence in Boston, especially with the huge spotlight.

Of course, there is also the omniscient health question with Drew. Looking at what the Red Sox need, and looking at what is available, I don't think there is any way the Red Sox find a better candidate to play RF than J.D. Drew. Risks be damned, I believe they need to sign him. I don't like a 4 or 5 year, $60M contract any more than anybody else here, but this team can't afford to save a couple bucks for the 2nd or 3rd best option.

Any Dodger fans want to chime in on his 2006 SLG numbers? .498? That's a bit of a drop off from his previous career norms. Does it appear he lost a step on his swing?

I for one will not be upset to see him leave. First off, there is the well known injury issues that Drew has. Next, he only hit 20 hr's last year and the Dodger's need power. He can hit for average and has a good obp- draws lots of walks. I also don't like his lack of fire, he seems very nonchalant. He would be ok on a team that is not looking for a leader and can provide decent numbers. The Dodgers need a guy who can be a leader and carry the team. Finally, if the guy doesn't want to be here, I say hit the road!

Drew has a high OBP and will draw walks, but considering he was the cleanup hitter in our lineup, he had very pedestrian statistics. I thought he wasn't worth the whole value of his contract, but as others have said, his defensive-game makes him the most complete outfielder on the market.

He'll be a good fit in Boston where OBP is stressed.

Boston, burning from its disappointing 2006 season, is acting quickly to get back on the right track. It is believed they are preparing to make a megabucks offer to J.D. Drew by the end of Monday that will easily top the $33 million Drew walked away from in Los Angeles. One person suggested it may even exceed the deal former Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon got with the Yankees, $52 million over four years.

Boston is way overpaying if they do that, Drew is a solid player but talk about injury prone. Doesn't have much passion for the game either, I think the Boston media will get to him.
