Re: Jaret Wright to Baltimore
I don't think we'll get much for Rodrigo, but I think we could land someone valuable for Benson. He's exactly what teams are looking for right now pitching wise. Rather than signing a Lilly/Meche/Padilla for 9-10 million a year, they're going after pitchers just as good that make less.Comment

Re: Jaret Wright to Baltimore
The Yankees are probably not going to get Zito or Schmidt. However, they are reportedly interested in Jeff Suppan. Ted Lilly is another possibility, if for no other reason than the fact that he kills the Red Sox (i personally hope Lilliy goes to the NL).Comment

Re: Jaret Wright to Baltimore
Our bullpen blew a ridiculous amount of games last season, we needed all the help we could get there, and trading away one of our young and consistent bullpen arms isn't good. And since you're most likely ignorant when it comes to the Orioles pitching prospects, they have plenty. Garrett Olson, Hayden Penn, Radhames Liz, Pedro Beato, and Brandon Erbe will all be ML ready by 2008/2009. Let them develop instead of trying to get mediocre veterans long-term.Comment

Benson isn't tradable. He hasn't waived his right to become a free agent, and no way he resigns just to be traded.Comment

Re: Jaret Wright to Baltimore
Interesting, I wonder if Leo whispered in management's ear about this?
As far as speculation that the Yanks would sign Suppan or Lilly. Well I never liked Suppan and Lilly is one maddening pitcher. There are stretches where he's scary good then stretches where he's crap. I have a feeling he'd wilt under the NY media. Wasn't he with the Yankees before and didn't do so great?Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Jaret Wright to Baltimore
Orioles acquired RHP Jaret Wright and cash from the Yankees for RHP Chris Britton.
How much could Wright have possibly cost as a free agent? Our guess is that he would have made right around the $3 million the Orioles are set to pay him here. Let's just say he would have cost $5 million instead. Are the Orioles so out of touch regarding the value of solid relievers that they figured Britton was worth less than $2 million? Britton was set to make the minimum for at least two more years and he was six years away from free agency. To sign a reliever that's a better bet for 2007 will cost the team at least the $2 million it might have saved by making the trade. We've never been more convinced that Mike Flanagan is in over his head as a GM. Wright may well be a decent starter with Leo Mazzone guiding him again, but he could have been had for cash alone. There was no reason to give up talent, too.
Cashman did a great job spinning basically nothing, in to another solid bullpen arm.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. The Yankees better start going after some starters though. For now all they have is Wang and Mussina (assuming they resign him). I don't trust RJ coming off back surgery after a sub-par season last year and Pavano hasn't pitched in almost 2 years and he could very well get hurt again. There's been rumors about then going after Suppan, Lilly, Clemens, and Pettitte so hopefully they can sign at least one of them.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

You're counting on minor league pitchers that may or may not pan out in two-three years.
I hope they've drafted better, but you do remember what happened to guys like Towers, Lopez, and Ponson right?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. A strong bullpen is important, but the Orioles also need starters.
