Re: Cubs sign DeRosa to play 2nd base

i followed him closely in atlanta.

he pretty solid defensively, not great, but he'll get it done consistently

on offense he has average power if played regularly 10-25 hrs

hes a good 2 or 8 hitter in my opinion and a good bench guy for pinch hits or defensive sub. he never got to play everyday in atlanta which makes me wonder what if ya know.

id say he's a good player but will not win you anything but a great support player, id say its a decent move

(i dont know what he did in texas so this may be off)

Not a bad move... he's not going to win any awards or anything, but he's solid, and will give you everything he has.

Great signing. He can play the OF as well, so that gives Piniella good flexibility if there are any injuries.

Having watched a few Braves games thanks to TBS I can say that DeRossa is a very good support type. He's more or less a light hititng guy but he's very consistent in the field.

Don't expect him to be a major cog of the offense but he's a solid defensive player who can provide an ok average and a little pop in the bat.

I'm not sold on Derosa. If he can put another good yera out then I might be sold on him.

can't be a bad signing tho.

DeRosa found the perfect time to have a career year.

It's good that he can play a lot of positions but he can't RHP. He's going to be 32 years old next season. There's no reason for me to believe he will be as productive next season as he was this season.

The deal is only 13 million so even if he flames out, he's not going to cripple the Cubs payroll flexability.

he's serviceable... probably hit around .270 with about 20 homers and 70 or so rbi's.... Good get for the Cubs IMO.

Is that some sort of joke? They have practically infinite payroll flexibility. Any limitation is an artificial one they impose themselves.

No they don't, the Tribune Company is in bad shape. That's why there are rumors of the Cubs being sold.

Its not because the Trib is in "bad shape".. its simply because the Trib is a CHEAP AS$ company when it comes to paying for a winner.

There will always be rumors of the Cubs being sold, simply because there a very good marketing team. Even when they suck, they sell out Wrigley. I wish those rumors are true, but I am almost 99.9% sure that they will never sell the Cubs unless the right (1 TRILLION DOLLA'S in a Dr. Evil voice) price comes along.

But I like this signing. Hes a utility player, which gives Lou more versatility in the lineup. I was also looking at his fielding stats, and he only commited a couple errors at 2nd. As long as he can put up the same batting average (or better) it would already be a good signing. I can see him batting 2nd, and getting plenty of opportunities to get on base with DLee and Ramirez after him.

DeRosa is going to play 2B.

There aren't a whole lot of 2B that can put up his numbers. He fits right in with an above average player at his position. He won't put up Loretta, Cano type numbers, but he'll do just fine.

Thanks guys for responding. Maybe he can be like Grudzielanek was in 03. Someone who is consistent, and plays hard.

From what I hear the Cubs made the Tribune the most money they ever have last year. They could easily spend more than the Yankees if they so choose. WGN is a cash cow, and the loyalty across the nation insures that will never change.

As stated before, i'll need to see it again next year to be sold on him. OBP isnt that great, but if he can repeat his career year, i'm fine with it. Wondering what they'll do with Theriot, Cedeno, and Izturis.

Do you just randomly make statements or know the facts to back them up?

                              2006

                              vs. Right: .278
                              vs. Left: .342

Did he hit better against lefties? Sure....but in no way is .278 against righties any indication that he can't hit them. If you look at his past years he didn't hit righties quite as well but there's no point at looking at those because DeRo changed his entire technique at the plate this year, which helped him immensely with his hitting.

Overall I think a good move for Cubs & DeRo. I've always liked him and enjoyed watching him here. For anyone who doesn't know, he learned a lot from our hitting coach (Jaramillo) and he made no secret about emulating Michael Young's batting stance/style. He & Mike became close here and he said Mike made him a better player. While he did have a break-out year that could've been a fluke I think he'll continue it because like I said above, it wasn't like he just randomly had a good year, he really worked on his hitting and changed his batting stance and entire approach to hitting.

He can play many positions but I'm sure he said he'd only sign if guaranteed he was starting 2nd baseman. He said he wanted to stay here but knew he'd be bounced around again and while he said it was fun to have the variety he wanted a set position to go to everyday--preferably 2nd base.

I hope this works out well for him and he's a very solid defender and a very capable hitter...I think he'd be a great hitter for the #2 spot.
