Did he hit better against lefties? Sure....but in no way is .278 against righties any indication that he can't hit them. If you look at his past years he didn't hit righties quite as well but there's no point at looking at those because DeRo changed his entire technique at the plate this year, which helped him immensely with his hitting.

Overall I think a good move for Cubs & DeRo. I've always liked him and enjoyed watching him here. For anyone who doesn't know, he learned a lot from our hitting coach (Jaramillo) and he made no secret about emulating Michael Young's batting stance/style. He & Mike became close here and he said Mike made him a better player. While he did have a break-out year that could've been a fluke I think he'll continue it because like I said above, it wasn't like he just randomly had a good year, he really worked on his hitting and changed his batting stance and entire approach to hitting.

He can play many positions but I'm sure he said he'd only sign if guaranteed he was starting 2nd baseman. He said he wanted to stay here but knew he'd be bounced around again and while he said it was fun to have the variety he wanted a set position to go to everyday--preferably 2nd base.

I hope this works out well for him and he's a very solid defender and a very capable hitter...I think he'd be a great hitter for the #2 spot.
How nice of you to cherry pick that number.
His line against RHP this season was .278/.342/.404

Yeah but look at the number of games he played those seasons compared to his playing time last year, if he gets the playing time i bet he'll produce.

I hope so. And yeah, I think he'll do a great job in the two spot.

I didn't 'cherry pick' that number...as mentioned, 2x, I chose this past years number because he changed his batting stance and hitting tendancies. Might just be my opinion but if a guy has a breakout year for no reason then you have reason to doubt their performance the following year. If the guy does something dramatic to make a change and you see results then I think you can attribute it to the change....point being, he's a better hitter overall due to the new stance.

Good point by bjowers...let's look at total number of games those years:

          2002: 72
          2003: 103
          2004: 118
          2005: 66
          2006: 136

The only year he had really bad hitting against righties was 2005 when he hit .191...and he only played in 66 games (148 total ABs). The other years not great but the next worst was .242 which IMO is far from saying he can't hit righty pitching.

I'm pretty happy so far. I'd like to see them go after Soriano, dump Jones, get a starter, and maybe a bullpen guy. Could also use a real solid utility guy. Thats not asking to much, is it?

The Cubs are very high on Cedeno so he will probably be given a chance at SS yet again.

I think the Cubs will try and trade Cesar Izturis. There are several teams looking for Middle Infielders, the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and if he is willing to play 2B you can add the Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Giants and Padres.

Theriot is solid defensively and he can play 2B, SS and 3B. He can also run, he stole 13 out of 15 bases and that could be very valuable coming off the bench late in a game.

From reading the various newspapers this morning, it seems like Izturis will play at SS, and Cedeno is the odd man out. Hendry said he would have to fight to make the team. WTF? Not sure that I agree with that. Lou did stress defense though.

Not the Cubs. If you look at the revenue streams generated by the Cubs, there shouldnt be a problem. The Cubs are a gold mine.

There aren't a whole lot of 2B that can put up his numbers. He fits right in with an above average player at his position. He won't put up Loretta, Cano type numbers, but he'll do just fine.
                      Todd Walker?

Why the Cubs traded Walker, I don't know.

Walker has a better OBP vs DeRosa and a better OPS vs DeRosa.

If Izturis plays anywhere but SS it should be considered a crime against your team.

Everything I've read says that Walker was a cancer in the clubhouse, so there wasnt much of a chance of him coming back. And he wasnt real good defensively.

I will be a little fumed if the Cubs decide to just give up on Ronny Cedeno already. I know he had a terrible second half, but you can see he has what it takes to be a heck of a ballplayer. Just my opinion, maybe thats why I am a not a scout.

There is something I like about him as well. Ken Rosenthal says they are also looking at Julio Lugo. Ronny's days appear to be numbered.

Ah, ok, I didn't know or hear about the cancer in the clubhouse. I don't think there is much difference defensively between DeRosa and Walker, because Walker has normally been a regular 2B and DeRosa, until last year, a utility player.
