Re: Red Sox sign JD Drew

2 years ago in Atlanta Drew's line was .305/.436/.569 in 145 games.....that's easily worth 14 mil/yr. Last year he battled nagging injuries most of the year and played in a pitcher's park but still hit .283/.393/.498 in 146 games. Pretty damn good numbers.....

He is injury prone though and during the end of his contract he may be way overpaid. But if he plays in 140 games for the next three or four years then the contract wouldn't look bad at all...especially in this year's market (career averages .286/.393/.512...).

Tony Massarotti of the Boston Herald (Link) got the story first, but I have more details on the specifics of the J.D. Drew physical. Drew took the physical shortly after the announcement of the deal in Orlando, but sources have told me that Drew showed problems in his shoulder that “could shut down his power.” Drew had minor surgery on his shoulder after the 2005 season, so it’s possible that there’s more damage in there. It’s important to note that in free agent acquisitions, a team often does not have the benefit of requesting medical records from his previous team prior to signing. Speculation centers on the damage to Drew’s shoulder being more like Scott Rolen circa 2005. As Massarotti reports, it is more likely that the Red Sox get protection in the form of a very limited escape clause rather than scuttling the deal altogether. Somewhere, Bill Simmons just had someone kick him in the groin.
In the wake of Randy Johnson‘s three-game suspension for throwing at Kenny Lofton‘s head (and did anyone else think of Crocodile Dundee? “That’s not wild, mate. That’s wild.”), the other professional sports have announced they will follow the AL President Gene Budig‘s example of sitting players down for similiarly significant lengths of time. Today, the […]

Interesting. I was wondering what was holding this thing up. Though I disagree about the Simmons comment as he's against the Drew signing. I doubt this thing gets scrapped but it will be interesting to see what happens. Boras might be a little pissed with the Red Sox after the whole Matsuzaka thing and might be unwilling to include some sort of an opt out clause.
