How many #4's do we need? Pretty much the entire rotation are lower end starters besides Felix, and Felix isn't even a true ace yet. You didn't even answer my question...who is going to setup Putz? Mateo? Sherrill?
Honestly? My Dream for the M's this post is as follows:

get rid of Piniero and Sexson; Take anything you can get.

    Sign Zito and Mulder/Marquis/Suppan.

Get a first baseman who can hit for average.

    the end.

As for your BP questions, you sure do make it sound like our ERA sat entirely on the back of one Rafael Soriano....once more....bullpens don't win games, entire teams do -- and pitchers that eat innings help the team a hell of a lot more than pitchers in the BP, who should have bit parts in the team, if that. If you lack faith in Mateo, Sherrill, and half a dozen other brilliant relievers in the M's organization, then perhaps you haven't been watching them pitch for the past few years. Mateo may have an ERA in the 4's, but with a good enough rotation in front of him, he could definitely be a pretty decent setup man. The setup man isn't the most important role on the team, and that is BY FAR the truth. Sherrill? I wouldn't want him as the setup man, he's too valuable in other situations -- but what about Mark Lowe? Take a look at his ERA. Sean Green has the potential to be great for our BP as well. There are many options. It would definitely be a battle for the role in ST, and what is so bad about that?

Let me ask you this about the Soriano deal: What good is a setup man who has nothing to set up? Soriano was coming off of an injury last year, re constructive surgery, but some how Horacio is now this horribly injury ridden player from back east? We got a 27 yr old lefty for the back of the rotation...something that the M's haven't even attempted to do for like five years, but automatically it's a bad thing because we gave up a setup man who had nothing to set up in the first place? Your logic doesn't make sense to me.

We've been waiting so damn long for them to change up the rotation from outside the team, and they finally do, so lets complain now because it's not perfect? Come on!!

With the M's in talks with Zito, and three or four starters from the World Series Champion Cardinals still available to fill in the middle of the rotation, I don't see how you can complain about the first good sign M's fans have seen regarding the direction that management is taking the team in about 5 years.

As for Felix being a potential ace...yeah, maybe -- if he tries hard enough; However, I think a more realistic plateau for Felix is a #2 guy, and he'd be damned good at that.

For now my Christmas wish for the M's is to see the M's Rotation as such by spring training:

    Zito
    Marquis
    Washburn
    Felix
    Ramirez

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw this thread. Then I read this was about the Ho - Soriano trade, and I was all

My "keep dreaming" was geared towards your "all we need to do is sign zito, suppan/mulder/marquis...trade Sexson...etc." You gotta understand who is running the M's show here. I'm surprised Bavasi even knows how to tie his own shoes. The guy is a freakin moron. Plus, we can't even get Schmidt or Eaton (who are both from the area) but we can get Zito, Mulder, or Suppan? Cmon man.

And you think Ramirez is going to eat all these innings?

Then we better trade Mateo because we sure as hell don't have a good rotation. And trust me, I've watched plenty of games over the past few years. And as far as Lowe goes, he's a wild card. People are saying it might even be a career-threatening injury.

Soriano is coming off a baseball to the head...freak injury. Yeah he had Tommy John, but he was pitching great last year until the injury happened. You can't really compare his injury last year to all of Ramirez's injuries last year. And the M's haven't got a lefty for the back of the rotation?! Washburn?! The guy is a #3 at best...

Again, look who is in charge. Bavasi hasn't made one solid move since he's been here. The track record speaks for itself. At least Beltre finally showed some signs of life last year, but still. And yeah, the M's are in talks with Zito. Big deal. We've been in talks with a lot of pitchers this year that ended up going someplace. What can we offer Zito that nobody else can? Everybody is throwing the farm at this guy but he wants to play for the M's?

          The critics chime in
" The deal that got the most attention within the industry was Atlanta's acquisition of Rafael Soriano from Seattle for Horacio Ramirez. "That was a great John Schuerholz deal," said one general manager. "Unbelievable." "
