Re: Uh, oh.
Yeah, the Cubs brass have said that they're making all these moves with the assumption that Prior won't be healthy at the start of next season.Comment

Re: Uh, oh.
Not really excited about this signing, but he did have a 4.01 ERA during the day the last three years. And yeah, dont ever expect Prior to be healthy. Never...Comment

Re: Uh, oh.
If they didn't need to go out and over pay for a mediocre starter they would never have given Ted Lilly $40 million.Comment

Re: Uh, oh.
All this money will either make Hendry and the Cubs look like geniuses or they'll look like the biggest boobs of the entire offseason throwing money at all their problems.

Re: Uh, oh.
From what I've read, the main reasons they've gone after Lilly and Marquis are because both pitchers are inning-eaters, something the Cubs really needed. Last year, with all those rookies and injuries, it was rare to see anyone pitch longer than 5 innings, which put a lot of strain on the bullpen. I think the Cubs didn't have their first complete game of the year until Rich Hill threw one in September.
I guess with Marquis we're going to find out whether it's worth having an inning-eater if that pitcher is a flyball pitcher that gives up homeruns left and right. Or, knowing the Cubs luck, both Lilly and Marquis will develop shoulder problems by spring training.Comment

Well, I hope you enjoy paying two pitchers who almost lost a combined 30 games last season $20M just to eat innings.Comment

Re: Uh, oh.
It's one thing to have a guy who can pitch a lot of innings, but when he's behind by 5 runs after 2...not such a good thing.
Bottom line, Marquis is a cancer. He mopes around and doesn't listen to insturction. When he pitched, you could see a different "attitude" among the rest of the team. Like they were already defeated.
And if he's a back of the rotation starter, or if the Cubs have any dreams of bouncing this guy between the rotation and pen, then he's gonna be even worse. He sees himself as a top end strike out ace. And when he doesn't get his way, he mopes.
When I think about Jason Marquis, two names come to mind:
Leo Mazzone and Dave Duncan.Comment
