Consider that Marcus Giles has only been a regular player for 4 seasons, one of which he missed 60 games due to injury. Yes his batting average and slugging percentage have dropped quite a bit the rest of his numbers are fairly consistant. in the 3 of the last 4 years he has hit at least 11 HR's, drove in at least 60 Runs and had 30+ Doubles. Most teams don't get those numbers out of their Second Baseman.

As for Brian Giles: lets forget that he went from a hitter friendly park in Pittsburgh to a pitcher friendly park in San Diego, that could have nothing to do with his drop off in power. He has still driven in at least 80 Runs in 8 straight seasons, thats not exactly terrible.
Did he happen to notice the DRAMATIC weight gains both of these guys had during the steriod era. Friggin Marcus was just a little guy then all of a sudden hes well over 200lbs and running over Mark Prior.

Sadly, you make the best point. If you can knock over juicy juicy mark, you've got to be drinkin' the same ****.

I definately think Prior was on something. Prior had huge calves and usually large calves and forearms are tell tale sign of a user. Plus the Prior's mentor Tom House was a large advocate for steriods, and said he used them while he pitched in the early 80's.

my main point was marcus wont see his full ability if he bats leadoff. if you signed him for that reason, waste.

Exactly. If last season wasn't evidence enough, I don't know what is. He's a free swinger, and unless you're Alfonso Soriano, that doesn't translate well to the leadoff spot.

If you think Marcus is a free swinger (career OBP .361), you better hope we don't trade for Baldelli (career OBP .329)...

Marcus' demise has been greatly exaggerated, he was fine leading off the 2nd half of last season. San Diego got themselves a good player.

Oh, I'm not saying he was terrible. I was actually a fan of Giles', and loved when he actually picked it up late in the year. I agree that SD got their hands on a good second baseman.

If the Padres had kept Dave Roberts their lineup would be perfect. Unfortunately they gambled with their LF situation and put too many eggs in Sheffields basket as their big bat. While there's a lot of offseason left, I prefer them to just find the best leadoff option for LF now.

                          Re: Marcus Giles released

Shannon Stewart is about the only option left in free agency to bat leadoff and play LF. There are a few possible options via trade: Brady Clark (would have to move from CF to LF), Brad Wilkerson and Reed Johnson.

With few options available on the open market that is why it is possible that Marcus Giles could be used to leadoff. There are more options for Left Fielders who bat lower in the lineup. Cliff Floyd and Preston Wilson make up the best of the FA's but there is a decent trade market with Kevin Mench, Geoff Jenkins, Jacque Jones, Marcus Thames, Reggie Sanders and Jason Lane either available or could be available with the right deal (in the case of some of those players either they or Brian Giles would be moved to LF).

Not so fast on the Marcus Giles decision.

It looks like he'll be batting second after all with Brian hitting 3rd behind him.

The Padres have considered Terrmel Sledge to be their leadoff hitter for the good reason being his OBP. While it has been unimpressive in the major league level, last season despite batting .230ish his OBP was .70 points higher.

I can't argue the decision. Adrian isn't an ideal cleanup hitter, but IMO right now he's the best option the Padres have.

                              LF T. Sledge
                              2B M. Giles
                              RF B. Giles
                              1B A. Gonzalez
                              CF M. Cameron
                              3B K. Kouzmanoff/R. Branyan
                              C J. Bard
                              SS K. Greene

*Fourth year in the league and still in the bottom order of the lineup. Not exactly a good spot for a guy who was supposed to be better offensively than defensively.
