Thanks guys. Sounds like the overall competition for the HOF will be pretty weak next year. Maybe Morris, Rice, Gossage and the like will be able to get in then?

Even though Gwynn/Ripken finished with very high %'s, I often wonder who the 8 people were that didn't vote for Ripken and who the 13 were that didn't vote for Gwynn. I know the one guy handed in a blank ballot and maybe other's did as well, but how can anyone not vote for those 2?

I know you guys love to hate on McGwire and what not, but he was my favorite player, and I'm sad he didn't get in. But congrats to Cal and Tony.

I think 2 guys turned in blank ballots. To account for for the other people who didn't vote for Ripken and/or Gwynn, a lot of the writers make a huge deal about first-ballot Hall of Famers and the rest of the Hall of Famers. Either you're a Hall of Famer or you're not, simple as that. It doesn't make any sense to leave a guy off your ballot, knowing you're going to vote for him next year. Ripken and Gwynn flat out belong in the Hall of Fame and if you disagree your voting privileges should be reconsidered.

To be fair, even without the juice talk he still didn't have the hits to get into the hall plus his piss poor career batting average.

I agree with you there, BUT, 500 HR's was always an automatic ticket to the Hall.... obviously it's not now.

You could make that same argument for Harmon Killebrew.

Great to see both get in. They are more than deserving.

Tony Gwynn, remains my all time favorite athlete. It was an honor to watch him play for 20 seasons.

.263 BA with 583 HR's and an OPS+ of 163 are very good #'s for a power hitter.

I hope these aren't the same writers with a guilty conscience that voted in Gaylord Perry.

Had to bring that up didn't you? Painful memories man.

I'm glad to see Gwynn and Ripken get such high votes, they deserve every one of them. Sooner or later, Rice will get in, he's waited long enough.

I just hate how revered Morris is for that game and EVERYBODY seems to forget the fact that Smoltz pitched a shutout too and would have won the game himself had Lonnie Smith not been such an idiot and watched the ball rather than Knobloch.

I wouldn't not vote for him because of the drugs. I would not vote for him because of his very low career hit total, the fact that the vast majority of his hits were home runs, and his pedestrian career batting average. It would be like voting Dave Kingman into the Hall, under the specter of drug use no less. Not gonna happen.

And I hate the argument that certain milestones guarantee you a free pass into the HOF, like 500 HRs. McGwire hit 583 HRs, but he only had 1626 career hits. Compare that to Andre Dawson, who hit 483 non-steroid-enhanced HRs, batted .016 higher for his career, and had over 1000 more hits. Sure Dawson played 5 years longer, but staying good for longer is part of what makes a player great too. And oh by the way, Dawson won 8 Gold Gloves instead of being a rock at 1B for his entire career.

If Dawson doesn't get in, there's no way in hell McGwire should get in.

                                Congrats to both.

I think Ripken is slightly overrated. But there's no questioning what he did for the game, and that he deserves to go.

Gwynn is one of the best hitters I've ever seen.
