Re: Does Anyone Like Realism Anymore?

Wow........Very Interesting............I am one to go for realism (sp?).............I am 26 and find it very hard to play any sports game on consistant basis because of the non realism in Sport Video Games.........Madden in no way is real.........NBA2K3 is almost real but I have seen Allen Houston throw it down too many times on someone............He does not do this in real life....I know.......Im a Knick fan......In NHL2k3 you can do a cheap swim move ala NHL 94 95 96 and get a goal on the hardest levels..........thats not real life..........Now with HH.......its not perfect but it the most closest thing to me when wanting to play a sim without having to play Front Office or Outta The Park...........To me it does not feel like the game is letting you get on base or not........Its feel very lifelike to me........Stats come out near to perfection when playing your own 162 game season........The real kicker is I have played in a 162 game season with 26 players......each having thier own team...........Stats come out perfect.............Nothing is exagerated (sp?)..........Avg. Hr. RBI's..............all on point.........I guess it all come down to a prefrence........I just find it amazing how more would lean toward the Arcade side than sim..........This explains all the nights I spent wondering why EA would not make Madden or Live a true sim.........Wondering why in the world are there Power swings in any baseball game.........Or even a turbo button in any sports games..............anyways...............great topic.......Love this boards.............

Actually, you guys make valid points. It is true that HH tends to take some of the control away, but in doing so, it adds realism to the game. As Graphic said, if you have mastered the cursor hitting, then you can jump up to bat with anyone and get a hit and that is not realistic at all. Much of baseball is determined by a player's ability. That's what HH brings. I am definitely going to get HH as it is the first one coming out but if it doesn't satisfy my needs for realism and graphics, then I will do the switch to WSB also. However, I just can't get over that 2-button swinging (power and contact). I think that is the most unrealistic aspect of any baseball game. Every player swings hard. If they make sweeter contact, the ball goes further. Their are only a handful of players who swing for the fences every swing and with the designers saying it is nearly impossible to hit a HR with the contact swing, that is definitely affecting my decision.

Wait a minute, you dont think Madden is realistic?
Oops my bad, wrong place, wrong time.

No game is perfect, in which they all have flaws that will take away from the realism.
But Yes. In all the sports games I playd, HH hands down is the closest to realism ever displayed on a video game.

I had my mind made up on WSB now I'm getting tempted by all this HH talk, I bought HH 2002 and 2003 but last year traded HH 2003 in for WSB and outside of how easy WSB was it was fun now I'm getting that HH feeling back.

Realism is fine and dandy, but after a while realism without excitement gets boring. PC version lacked last year because of the lob throws and the lack of foul balls. There was absolutely no incentive to play the console version last year. No minors killed longevity. No fluff killed the excitement for the long term as well. Just turned into the same ol same ol.

Re: Does Anyone Like Realism Anymore?

For those of you who have only played HH2003 (PS2 or PC): All previous versions of HH (2000-2002) played different from 2003. Not dramatically. Last year the PC crowd was very upset with 3DO because they took out some vital elements in the tune file that affected hitting. This may be why some felt the game wouldn't let you hit sometimes...no matter what. This year they have supposedly fixed that. The best version of HH I played was HH2000. Man that game was sweet. Below average graphics but I had it tweaked to near perfection. Great tune file and all the user made stadiums and uniforms you could imagine. That was a great summer. 2001 was good also. If this years version has those hitting variables back I'll be a happy man.

I didnt play 2000, I was happy with 2001, but I really enjoyed 2002. 2003 was a major disappointment from the year before.

Re: Does Anyone Like Realism Anymore?

I played about 61 games of HH last year then felt no connection to my team because of no minors.

The reason HH wins in realism is the fact that it's not entirely user based. I find ASB and WSB too dependent on that damn cursor. I'm not genius with the cursor and when I strike out 12 times no matter the pitcher that's not baseball. Like I said last year, the stats of a player only seemed to affect the size of the cursor not the hitter.

There's got to be a more responsive way of hitting than cursor or HH. The problem with HH is it's too simple where as cursor based systems aren't baseball.

I have very little faith in ASB, WSB or MVP as taking the crown for smarts of the AI. Sega Sports shows that they can make a good product but not polish the game. ASB will as the people that follow this forum, the people the work for Acclaim well... And EA Sports they just don't know what the people need. They think they know and deliver arcade style homerun fests.

AS for 3do and team .366 they have budget problems. The reason for poor graphics I would guess is they have a limited budget that can't spend the time on spectacular graphics. If they improved animations that would be a big step forward.

HH could get bad on somewhat dated textures it a) improved animations and b) made the ballparks unbelievable. Those are always the first things gamers notice.
