UCF's 2007 Racial and Gender Report for MLB is out

I can't access the PDF yet, but here's the percentages

    59.5 White
    29.4 Hispanic
    8.4 Black American
    2.4 Asian
0.3 other race (The Curacao duo of Andruw Jones and Randall Simon)

Easily the most racially balanced of the 4 pro sports (NBA is majority black, NHL is majority white, NFL is over 90% white or black) MLB's demographics look like the real USA

I'm not black, but the issue is those players are disappearing in numbers. When i got into MLB in 1994-95, there was a lot more of those stars and it wasn't an issue at 19%.

Then the 1995 NBA Draft happened, the day KG got drafted out of HS, the black talent pool dropped for good, and it shows from 1996 on to now.

Re: UCF's 2007 Racial and Gender Report for MLB is out

MLB may be the most balanced or representative of the U.S. or whatever, but the plummeting percentage of black dudes playing the game is a problem. It definitely seems like the majority of black folks don't give a rat's *** about baseball, but it is difficult to pinpoint why.

From an anecdotal level, my time in Boston has demonstrated to me that hardly any black people in the New England area care about the Red Sox. Maybe when they are advancing in the playoffs, but otherwise not. It is unquestionably a white persons interest. I think in Boston it just blends in with the underneath the surface segregation between the two cultures, and probably doesn't have a lot to do with baseball itself.

Blame college baseball and it's no full scholarships
Blame KG for coming out of high school in 95 and getting that money. Black players weren't an issue back in 1995
Blame foreign economics. It costs as much money or less to get 10 or 15 Spanish prospects for 1 star US Born prospects

Also another question, on managers. This is what the UCF study says

"As of the report's publication date, MLB has six managers of color (two African-Americans and four Latinos)."

Who's the fourth Latino managing this current season? I only know Acta, Guillen and Fredi Gonzalez

They might be counting Piniella (though thats a stretch as he's of Spanish heritage which is technically Latin, but usually Latino means from Latin America.)

I've never really bought into all this stuff as the huge deal some people make it out to be.

Here's the PDF. It's viewable now.

              http://www.ncasports.org/images/2006_RGRC_MLB.pdf

They set it up so that the decrease for black players from last year to this year seems more drastic by rounding up the 8.5 up to a 9 in 2005 and using the 8.4. Actually, a decrease of 1 black player from 101 to 100 doesn't make a drastic drop.

              Here's the exact percentages
2004 had 8.9 percent with 111 black players
2005 had 8.5 percent with 101 black players
2006 had 8.4 percent with 100 black players which is relatively steady compared from the drop from 04 to 05.

But here's the crossroads, will 2006 be the last year that there are 100+ black players in Major League Baseball, here's hoping that it's not the case.

I'm not trying to sound ignorant here, but outside of Ryan Howard, and possibly Brandon Phillips, how many YOUNG black stars are there? I'm really drawing a blank here... I mean you still have Barry and Griffey, but they're getting old... For baseball to be popular with the black community, they need a black star the kids can identify with IMO. Until we get academies in the inner city and have a constant turn out at those academies, I'm worried the number will continue to decrease yearly.

That guy who posted about young black players It sounds ignorant at first , but now that i thought of it. Here are good questions

                    As of that 2007 report

Are there more of in MLB, 1980's born aka "young" black players, or Asian players period.

Are there more 1980's born white players than there are black players (100).

Are there more 1980's born hispanic players than there are black players (100)

Being black (if my name didnt give it away for you guys) and spending time in schools that a prodominantly black and some that where prodominantly white I think I can speak on this.

It goes back to high school sports. You have to understand that there is still alot of segregation in the school system. I dont mean John Ashcroft/Strom Thurman 1960 stuff but I just mean because of the way things were back then and even further back, you still see the end results of those times today. Most black kids grow up in the inner city. If they arent growing up in the inner city and more in a rural area, they are mostly in black pockets in the rural areas. You mix that in with the rapid increase of high cost private schools (which most black families cannot afford to send thier kids to) and you will see the difference in schools. School A is a public school with mostly white kids and a few blacks and hispanics and asians sprinkled in. School B is the prodominanbtly black school, usually in the inner city that is sprinked with some white kids and some hispanics and asians. There is an inblalance between theese schools as far as funding goes, quality of education ect. While School A has many sports programs, including baseball, the percentage of black kids at that school is very low compared to white kids. Factor that in with the fact that half of those black kids are girls then youve even reduced the number of black male potential HS baseball players down a GREAT deal.

Now look at school B, the prodominantly black high shcool. Outside of basketball, and football, all other sports might or might not be there. Its not because of a lack of interest in baseball its because school B is usually some inner city school that doesnt get the funding, perks, hookups that Public school A does. So while there are tons of black male students, there is no money and funding for full blown athletic depts with all kinds of sports.

Then you have school C, the private school where the future trust fund babies are. When's the last time youve seen a black "trust fund kid?" Heck you dont even have to be a trust fund kid. Im not against private schools but private schools have a high price tag because there is not as much funding from the government..but they still have everything a kid would want, including a diverse sporst program (baseball, football,, golf, tennis, swimming, etc) because they are usually founded by white people and ran by white people who want a place where thier kids can learn that is less violent, and to be honest, some of these parents, not all would rather thier kids NOT be around minorities 8 hours a day. The average black family cannot afford to send thier children to these schools, so naturally you dont see as many of us attending.

In a nutshell its about the high schools and funding, and what type of HS it is. Most blacks are either in a huge mostly all black HS, which most lack the funds and government interest in them to have a healthy vibrant sports program and the rest of the black kids are in school A, where they are probably about 8-12% of the student body, half are girls, so your number of young black men that MIGHT have an interest in baseball to even be on the baseball team is low.

This is why you are seeing a decline in young black players coming into the majors. Its not that the MLB doesnt want them or there is some kind of conspiracy to keep them out. Its more on the bigger issue of the imbalance of whats going on at the grade school and high school level.

Re: UCF's 2007 Racial and Gender Report for MLB is out

As an Asian baseball fan, i bring this perspective. Long though.

The black athlete in baseball was not an issue for me when i first got into baseball, and that was in 1994. Sure there are more of them in NBA and the NFL compared to baseball then. It's always been that way my whole 13 years of exposure. However the black athlete in MLB was very healthy at the time at 19%. It's nowhere near the 27% back in the 70's, but lets face it, i wasn't alive in the 70's, born until 85 or in the USA until 1992 so it's not my problem.

The RBI initiative that was started in 1989, there were real results after it's first 5 years. The black athletes in baseball grew from 17% in 1989, to 19% in 1995. It seemed to stem the decline after the 70's and built back up.But i will tell you right now why it has dropped since.

The 1995 NBA Draft. The day Kevin Garnett a high schooler got picked to the NBA and his 1 million rookie salary playing for the TWolves, A whole generation of aspiring black athletes started turning away from baseball, thinking hey if he can go to the pros at 18, then so can they. Think about it, 18 year old MLB draftees, even the best of the best don't go to the big show just like that, there are the minors where pay pales compared to the black athletic peers playing in the NBA. It's that simple. And that's not even mentioning football.

What JAckie Robinson did was not just break the color barrier for his race, he did it for all the hispanics cause lets face it, most hispanics in today's baseball look just like African Americans with the only differences between them are that they have Spanish last names and speaks Spanish. Without him, Roberto Clemente wouldn't be CLEMENTE, and they'd be no Tiants, Marichals, Pedro's, Sammy Sosa' David Ortiz's and Vlads plkaying today cause they would get discriminated for being too dark skinned.

Also for Jackie breaking the color barrier, it was not just for MLB, he was in effect doing it for ALL sports period. He also broke the barrier before the NBA or the NFL did so the talented black athletes of today have more sports of choice on TV or actual athletic playing, not just baseball.

Speaking of choices, there is another good reason the hispanics and asians do choose baseball. They love the game and they have a great passion for it yes, but to be honest, the hispanics and asians who choose baseball do so simply because that's the only American sport they see on TV. They don't get to see/watch very much of the NFL and/or basketball where they live either by choice or economic circumstances. As for Soccer, the other sport of choice for hispanics, it isn't very popular in the United States. There's a lot more American money for Hispanic athletes to potentially make in baseball, than soccer will ever have.

And to continue my point, the 1995 NBA Draft drastically cut the black athlete pool to choose from and recruit/scout from and play baseball, but they're not being discriminated from playing baseball. If they want to play they will play, and MLB managers, GM's coaches and fellow players will give them ample opportunities to get in the game and succeed. The black athlete pool shrank considerably since the 1995 NBA Draft as it was 17% in 96 and 97, 15% in 98, 13% from 99-2001, 10% in 2002, 8.9% in 2004, 8.5% in 2005 and 8.4% in 2006.

But, If "black" means skin color, there is NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER in the 3 professional sports. Not all blacks are born in the USA, nor all blacks speak English. Some speak spanish and in Andruw's case, Curacao.
