Re: UCF's 2007 Racial and Gender Report for MLB is out

Instead of wasting a new thread on it. Here's the annual report published on Jackie's Day. MLB gets its first A grade among players since that study started

    White 60.4% 719
    African-American 10.2% 121
    Latino 27.0% 322
    Asian 2.4% 29
    International 28.7% 342

It's the first time since 1995 where African Americans playing MLB went up.

I have no illusions of it becoming more popular than the NBA or NFL among those people, but at least it'll never go down that bad again. They have the Compton academy which is a huge success and 2 more to come in Houston and near the Marlins new stadium. That in turn should help it close to 19% as it was when i first got into the game in 1994

As far as off the field's concerned. I have 2 questions

    1. Why is Lou Pinnela considered hispanic? He was born in the USA, has that southern drawl and he lacks the skin tone to be anything but white

    2. They say there's 5 minority GM's now. Who's the fifth guy after Omar, Ken Williams, Amaro and Reagins

if these numbers are accurate, then right off of the bat that got a GLARING error....

Both Andruw Jones (Texas) and Randall Simon (out of baseball)...and they might as well add Jair Jurrjens from the Braves...are black...period...end of discussion

As a person of black and Latin ancestry...I can also tell you that any survey that EXCLUDES black Latins in the Black category and solely puts them in the Latin category is flawed, incorrect and totally inaccurate...

And it should be pretty damn obvious why I say that....

I can't access the PDF yet, but here's the percentages

      59.5 White
      29.4 Hispanic
      8.4 Black American
      2.4 Asian
0.3 other race (The Curacao duo of Andruw Jones and Randall Simon)

Easily the most racially balanced of the 4 pro sports (NBA is majority black, NHL is majority white, NFL is over 90% white or black) MLB's demographics look like the real USA

I'm not black, but the issue is those players are disappearing in numbers. When i got into MLB in 1994-95, there was a lot more of those stars and it wasn't an issue at 19%.

Then the 1995 NBA Draft happened, the day KG got drafted out of HS, the black talent pool dropped for good, and it shows from 1996 on to now.

You're right. But you can't blame the survey. Blame the Census people who don't consider hiospanic as a race. MLB never had black issue as far as "skin color" is concerned in my 15 years of MLB exposure.

BTW i updated it to 2009

yes, I used to work for the Census Bureau some years back. They and other organizations do the same stupid thing. It all goes back to allowing others to define one's self...which 99% of the time is NEVER a good thing....

I saw the update also...it looks a lot better

Re: UCF's 2007 Racial and Gender Report for MLB is out

              The 2010 study is out

              2010 Opening day rosters

              White 59.8%
              Black 9.1%
              Latino 28.3%
              Asian 2.4%
Other 0.4% (Andruw Jones and Jair Jurjenns)
              Int'l 28.2%

Well it was a step back from the 2008 season but a slight step up from 2009. I guess it'll take another 10 years to have the percentage of black players consistently in the teens. I choose that range because when I first got exposed to MLB in 1994 was 19%.

However the stuff I really care about on this is the managers/GM's/owners of color. I want MLB to become whet the NBA and more recently the NFL has become

In the NBA, if the Hawks beat the the Bucks in Game 7, there will be a minority head coach or GM in the NBA Finals for the 10th straight year

The NFL with help from the Rooney Rule, has had a minority head coach or GM in the past 4 Super Bowls

In MLB. GM Ruben Amaro of the Phillies went to the World Series joining these managers/gm's

              2009 Ruben Amaro
2005 Williams/Guillen of the Champion Chicago White Sox
              2002 Dusty Baker
1996 Bob Watson of the champion Yankees
1992-93 Cito Gaston for the back to back Blue Jays

I don't give a **** what race baseball players or managers are, as long as they're good. Other than that, who cares.

EDIT: Oh, this is bumped from years ago, when my position was exactly the same.

It takes a minimum of 1 person, 1 ball, 1 hoop, and about 100sq.ft to play basketball.

It takes a lot more to play baseball, and it has a much more frustrating learning curve. It costs more money, too.

Yeah, I don't think this is a racial thing as much as these minority kids who may have played baseball 20 years ago are now playing football or basketball.

How can you blame institutions that by and large probably don't see nearly the money that their football programs see? How are they supposed to sponsor full rides when they are most likely not supported themselves?

What about simply explaining this in terms of geographic regions and what sport is emphasized there? Because actually you have a highly disproportionate number of Latino players as compared to the present population, but doesn't that make sense considering how many have transplanted from the Latino countries and how important baseball has stayed in those regions?

While were on the Latino subject

They get signed to the minors at 15-16 years old. Why can they get away with that but Americans who get drafted have to be 18

It is cheaper two give a bunch of guys a football, or build two basketball hoops and lay down some cement , than it is to build a mound, fences, bases, buy bats, and equip every player with a glove.

This is why the NBA, and NFL are more accessible to EVERYONE , not just a particular color. And then in HS, pads and helmets are provided, whereas no HS team provides mitts or bats.

And actually , I do agree the expansive minor league baseball (and low profile college baseball...except for Watson's bromance with Matt Ott) system limits immediate gratification, so amongst the younger generation, NFL and NBA is probably more attainable. The irony is the MLB doesn't have a salary cap so you can earn more there.
