Soriano had an .880 OPS, ichiro had an .813 OPS last season. If Soriano improves his plate discipline just a little he'll be the best player in the leauge in 2 years.
What a joke Soriano better than Ichiro !

Re: What a joke Soriano better than Ichiro !
Soriano was also a rookie in '01 with only low level minor league experience while ichiro played like 8 years in the japanese pro leagues. Soriano also improved every possible aspect of his hitting last year. Dont forget he's only 25 is it not possible for him to improve and become a better hitter.Comment

Ichiro is not that great. He is a good player but people give him far too much credit. It was an utter disgrace that he won MVP in 2001. The guy can hit, extremely well. He can run, extremely well. He's a great fielder. He has most of the tools. I'm sure he can hit 20 homeruns if he really wanted to. But people make him out to be this huge star. He really isn't. Good player, but overrated.
Soriano is gonna be a very good player in a couple of years. I don't think he overachieved last year. I think he'll have an Alex Rodriguez type career. Remember in 1996 when ARod just broke out and came within votes of beating out Juan Gonzalez for MVP. Then what happened in 1997? Arod just fell off. He has a nice year, but nothing compared to the year before. The same will probably happen to Soriano. But his 2002 performance is an example of what he can become in a couple of years. Similar to how ARod showed what he would become a couple of years later.
But too many people are making Soriano as the future Vlad. That might be true, but it's not gonna happen yet. The guy still needs to work on consistancy and drawing walks. He had an impressive OPS b/c of his power numbers. But both Ichiro and Soriano are not great leadoff hitters. They are terrible OBP guys. But in today's sport, walks for a leadoff hitter don't matter much anymore so I guess my argument is irrelevant.
Strike outs are just another out. They are overrated. There are people in this league who didnt go after Jose Hernandez b/c he strikes out a lot. Those same teams are still looking for a shortstop who can hit .300 and bash 25 homeruns with no problem.
I rather a player strikeout than hit into a double play. And a leadoff hitter striking out is really not an issue. the guy only leads off once (unless the lineup card just falls right later in the game). A strikeout, groundout, flyout, still get you the same dayam thing. An out."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. When you only walk 25 times in a year 150 strikouts kill the team.
By K'ing you don't move a runner over, get a sac fly, or have a chance for an errorComment

Re: What a joke Soriano better than Ichiro !
There are 2 sides to the strike out argument. One the one hand a lot of Ks can be a sign of a hitter with poor discipline/selection at the plate and could mean that he wont do much in the MLB. However look at Jim Thome, he consistenly is near the top of the league in K's yet he also walks 100 times a year and has an OBP over .400 and an OPS over 1.000.Comment
