but how can one think he's for real when he's been a career minor leaguer with cups of coffee with some major league teams.. heck, what about that guy a few years back everyone (scouts, etc) was raving about- Chris Richards? haven't heard a peep from him in a looooooong time.

Can you explain a little more of why he's a poor man's Adam Dunn?

He is a very patient player who is going to give you alot of power and have a high OBP. But his average is not going very high due to his high strikeout rate. Which is a product of him being too patient at the plate, which leads to him taking a lot of border line pitches.

The reason I call him the poor man's Adam Dunn is because if he was on Dunn's level he would have more than a few cups of coffee in the majors.

I hope that explains it to you somewhat.

The poor man's version of Adam Dunn is sRussel Branyan. This makes him the even poorer man's version.

yes, it does...but it sounds very similar to a Russell Branyan more so than Adam Dunn don't you think?

No and no. Unlike Branyan, both Cust and Dunn have shown the ability to draw alot of walks to go along with their horrible averages. Not only is Branyan a horrible hitter for average, but he doesn't draw a huge amount of walks either (aka, completely worthless).

He was on the O's about 4 or 5 years ago... I think they traded him to The Rockies after he got hurt and I've never heard from him again...

Looking up his stats, he last played in the big in 2003 with the Rockies for 19 games...

                            BAL + STL 2000 14HR 37RBI's 62 games 215 ab's 40k's 17BB
                            BAL 2001 15HR 61RBI's 136 games 483 ab's 100k's 45BB
                            BAL 2002 4HR 21RBI's 50 games 155 ab's 30k's 12BB (He got hurt real early in 02)
                            COL 2003 1HR 3RBI's 19 games 27 ab's 6k's 3BB

BTW oddly enough Richards was traded to the Rockies for one... Jack Cust.

Chris Richards, IIRC back with the Cards he hit a HR in his first major league at bat, not long after we turned around and sent him to Baltimore for Mike Timlin.

                                Exactly

Cust is a very patient hitter at the plate which allows him to draw a lot of walks. Which leads to a high OBP even though he has a low average. Like Snepp said thats why a think he is a little more in the Adam Dunn mold than Russell Branyan.
