Re: What players have been the biggest surprises this year?

    Blue Jays

Er well...most of the surprises have been BAAAAD like Frank Thomas whiffing and Jason Frasor looking like a minor leaguer.

    HOWEVER....

There is some good to report on. Casey Janssen is looking spectacular in the bullpen and he's more or less the setup guy these days. Fantasy owners should also try to pick up Jeremy Accardo who's the Jays closer right now. He's been lights out with an amazing K/BB rate and hasn't allowed a run in 18 IP so far.

Jesse Litsch (sp?) is a kid from double A who was recently called up. He pitched a whale of a ballgame against the O's and will be pitching against the Phils. I can't quite put him as a surprise because a lot of kids come up and have great first starts but flame out. If he has a good start against the Phils tho he'll be included in the positive surprise list.

Jorge Sosa- this guy was putrid last year, two teams basically gave up on him and he's had three great starts
Damion Easley- he's got 7 HR, that's ridiculous
Shawn Green- I thought he was done

Surprised nobody has mentioned Ryan Howard as a disappointment, go from NL MVP to hitting .204 with 6 HR's and 23 RBI's is a joke for a player with his talent level.

Mike Lowell: .317 BA with 30 RBI's in 37 games

            B.J. Upton: .331 BA with 7 HR's

            Hunter Pence: .355 BA, 4 HR's and 15 RBI's in only 16 games

Sammy Sosa: hitting a respectable .273, 9 HR's and 30 RBI's shows that the year off may have done more good than harm for him (or he's juiced up, whichever)

For the Yankees it's mostly been bad surprises.

I guess a good suprise is that Pavano gave us 2 starts. I was expecting 0.

I think he got a lot of hype after raking in the spring and making the bigs out of camp. Not to say it isn't a surprise, as it is a huge one. The guy hadn't played above AA and that was only for 20 or so games in 2001, before missing 3 years for personal/drug issues. It really is a great story to hear a guy turn his life around... here's hoping he stays on track.

Opponents aren't giving him much to hit and he's not helping himself by trying to pull everything. I was at the HR Derby last year and he (not to mention David Wright) put on an amazing display of power. He's simply too talented not to turn it around at some point.

How about on the Dodgers... Jason Schmidt??? Looks like he may not be healthy or something, because when he was he was one of the top hurlers in the NL.

And Saito the closer has been lights out. I guess he was good last year, but us east-coasters don't hear a lot about the west as we're too busy sleeping...

                          For the Orioles:

Jeremy Guthrie: claimed off of waivers from Cleveland. Ever since he stepped into the rotation (3 starts), he is 1-0 with a 0.85 ERA with 14 K's in 21.1 innings pitched. He's 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA overall.

Daniel Cabrera: really seems to have turned the corner. Only one bad start all year, and has made it through 5 innings in each one of his starts.
