Just look the last 5 years, us against them. They smoked us the last two times in the ALDS. Their aggressive style and small-ball usually works very well against us.

Granted our pitching staff is the best it's been in a long time, I definitely like our odds more this year than in the recent past.

No doubt. They've matched up real well against the Yanks for a while now. But I think this Yankee team might be better balanced than they have been since the Tino / Paul O' Neill days. The pitching looks solid all the way around, with some questionable middle relief. Like I said, it's even money in my book versus the Angels. I just thought you took it overboard when you said that you said "I still don't think this team can beat the Angels in a 5 game series."

Really, I couldn't care about winning the division, I just refuse to watch the Sox at the moment because the games are painful to sit through. Not for lack of effort, like Cam said, but they just don't seem to be able to put anything together. I have a hard time sitting through a Sox game anyway, even when they're winning, so that doesn't help either, and with school work and such it works out that they are sucking at a time I'm just not interested in watching.

They'll be in the playoffs and that is what matters in the end. Embarassing that they blew this lead? Yes, but it really doesn't mean much.
On paper, I think the Yanks have more talent than the Angels. The Angels just play some really aggressive and smart baseball. They never beat themselves and the Yanks have no answer for Figgins.

The Sox need Manny back in the worst way...

Personally I wouldn't want to tank my way into the playoffs the way Boston seems to be doing. You need to be going into the playoffs with at least SOME momentum. Boston isn't exactly the greatest place in the world to be struggling when heading into the postseason and I think Cleveland has enough young pitching and a pretty darn good bullpen that they can beat Boston.

I also see the Yanks losing to the Angels so in my world it's going to be a repeat of the '86 ALDS. Hopefully there isn't an event that causes someone to kill himself a couple years later.

Plus, the Yankees have always seemed to hit Sabbathia well while they always struggle against Lackey.
              Bah.

After last year beating up on the Tigers in the regular season, and then facing Kenny freaking Rogers in game 3, and still getting dominated, I'm not going to worry about this stuff anymore.

We are capable of beating any team in the postseason, and losing to any team. Doesn't matter to me who it is, if we are good enough to win the world series we should beat them.

True, but playing in the pressure cooker of Boston where meltdowns like this are met with people jumping off buildings...well, it makes playing at home uneasy to say the least.

I agree, I think the choice of which 5 game series they want in the first round also makes it a bigger deal then it would have in the past. It would be in the Sox's best interest to have the best record in the AL.

It's pretty humorous that winning the division is no longer "important" for some fans now.

I also don't remember any fan on here saying "Oh my God we have to win the division!" beforehand.

Would Sox fans like to keep the division? Of course, but it doesn't matter how you make the playoffs as long as you make them.

It's true - the playoffs are a crapshoot. But I would think more than a few Red Sox fans would certainly be celebrating if they do win the division. It's not like it's meaningless, especially when the lead was as big as it was and, for much of the year, it was all but assumed by many that this would be their year to take the division.

As Mike & The Mad Dog said yesterday (as much as it pains me to admit they are right sometimes), if Boston wins Game 1 of their DS it pretty much cures all prior ills.

The Jays are hot coming into this weekend and they've got some serious arms throwing in this series. Halladay has been unhittable in Yankee Stadium. You have to assume Boston will take 2 out of 3 from TB so the Yanks will have their work cut out for them.

While winning the division would be sweet, I hope Torre doesn't bust out all the stops to try and win it. While Francona is bringing in Papelbon in 8th inning games down a run (which, IMO, was a little bit of a panic move) I wouldn't want Torre to burn out Mariano before the playoffs. Making the postseason is what matters after all. That doesn't mean I want them to rest all their starters or any of that. But give Posada the day off now and then, maybe even rest Arod for a game, etc.

I'm hoping Wang will have a bounce back game tonight after last weekend in Boston. Saturday worries me, Kennedy has been great but he'll be pitching on nine days rest and the Blue Jays will be facing him for the second time.

Clemens has fared well against the Jays this season, hopefully he can do the same this series. Hughes has been getting better each start, him vs. Burnett will be a tough one.

I'm hoping for 3 outta 4, but two outta two will probably be the case - the Jays are playing some good ball right now.

Oh yeah, every Sox fan would be celebrating if they won the division, but no Sox fan is going to kill themselves if they lost the division.

Now, if they somehow collapsed and had missed the playoffs completely? Suicide rate would be at an all time high in Boston.
