A rule that needs to be changed
This has bothered me forever. They need to change the scoring rules into an earned run for any run that scores as a result of an error on the pitcher. It has never made any sense to me. If someone can justify it, please explain.

Re: A rule that needs to be changed
ERA is a measure of the pitcher's pitching ability, not his fielding and pitching abilities. -

Re: A rule that needs to be changed
A useless stat? Wins and Losses.
Example... who's better? A 15-8 Steve Trachsel with a 4.97 ERA and a WHIP of 1.60 or Kelvim Escobar who went 11-14 with a 3.61 ERA and a WHIP of 1.28. According to wins and losses Trachsel is better but pitching wise it's obvious Escobar had the better year.http://flotn.blogspot.com

Re: A rule that needs to be changed
the problem with WHIP is that it treats a bloop single the same as a home run
ERA does a better job of taking that into accountComment

Re: A rule that needs to be changed
WHIP is better suited for relief pitchers, as in certain situations, they'll be called in for a particular matchup to prevent someone from reaching base.I write things on the Internet.

Re: A rule that needs to be changed
It's not that ERA is a useless stat, it's just that it's not a great stat. Like any stat in baseball (including saber stats) you can't really use one to lead an argument. Each compliments the other."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
