I don't even think the topic merits discussion. He's a lock HOFer. People nowadays are way too jaded by this steroid era.

Re: Is Craig Biggio A HOFer?

        Definetly a HOF.

Some may not care, but Bill James has Biggio rated the number 5 second basemen in the history of the game. He ranks behind only Joe Morgan, Eddie Collins, Rogers Hornsby, and Jackie Robinson.

In fact, he's ranked as the 35th best player in the history of the game. Crazy, I know. He goes on to compare him to Griffey Jr., and makes a real arguement about how fans see the HR and say Griffey must be better. However, he takes a Win Shares approach and compares them in that manner, detailing his findings, by the stats. Really an interesting book, and when you rank win shares, Biggio comes out ahead.

For anyone that says they are a fan of the game, they should check out James's Baseball Abstract. I believe the latest version can be found at Borders for $4. It details players careers up to 2000, and covers the history of the game, from the beginnings. Good read!

Re: Is Craig Biggio A HOFer?

Don't know if anybody said this yet, but having though of the four 300/300 members (HR/SB):

                - Barry Bonds
                - Bobby Bonds
                - Willie Mays
                - Andre Dawson

Mays is the only one with over 3,000 hits. After looking at those career HR/SB stats in the first post, 14 more home runs for Biggio and he will be in an elite offensive category with 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and 300 stolen bases (of course, Bonds may join that soon as well).

If he gets that, there is no doubt that he will be first-ballot.

Re: Is Craig Biggio A HOFer?

I can't really argue with 3000 hits, but something still doesn't sit well with me. A lot of people knock some players for putting up #s over a very long period of time but never being great players (see Fred McGriff, and to some extent Sammy Sosa) but they give Biggio a free pass on that one. He lasted a long time, but he was never spectacular. I don't think he was even the best player on his team at any point in his career. A lot of his support seems to come from sentimental reasons that really shouldn't affect whether you're a hall of famer or not. Yeah it's nice he played for the Astros all this time, but that shouldn't determine it one way or another. IMO he's a very borderline HOF, but this reeks of double standards and i don't like it.

edit: just for clarification, i'm referring mostly to the sentiment i've been reading from sports talking heads and writers, not really the people on this board for the most part.

He's made 7 All-Star teams, won 4 Gold Gloves, and won 5 Silver Sluggers (including one as a catcher). That sounds pretty spectacular to me.

It's hard to be the best player on your team when you are a 2nd baseman. He's put up some spectacular numbers for that position (and as a lead-off hitter no less).

My guess is that you can count the number of 2nd basemen that were the best players on their team for an extended period of time (longer than one season) on one hand.

Exactly. Hornsby and Collins would make that list. They might be the entire list.

I'm on the fence with Biggio. Generally, I'm hesitant to elect a player who achieved a milestone on longevity.

I believe the HOF should be reserved for the game's elite, not for the "very good/borderline". 3,000 hits locks his status though.
