Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
I really wonder how much a manager actually matters in MLB. Sure they have to know how to run a bullpen and manage ego's of 25 guys on a daily basis, but, managers have bench coaches, hitting coaches, pitching coaches, etc. How much does it truly matter? I mean Lou Piniella was a GOD in Seattle, then went to Tampa and lost a ton of games and couldn't wait to get out. Did he suddenly get stupid?Comment

I agree with you that MLB managers aren't THAT important. They don't have the same impact to success/failure that NFL or NBA coaches have on their teams. However, I think a great manager can probably squeeze an extra 5-10 wins out of a team each year (and the flip side for bad managers). Half the difference in the M's this season is how much better Hargrove has done with the bullpen. He was inserting the right guys in the right situations and even giving Putz the ball in the 8th inning in crucial, high pressure save situations. He NEVER did that last year and the M's were burned at times as the setup guys couldn't get the hold. And when he does put JJ in that situation he gives him rest the following days so he doesn't burn him out. I'm still not a Grover fan, but he was a much better manager this season (and he admitted that yesterday).Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
Well looking at some of the other replies with some more info I can understand why Hargrove resigned. It's the same thing that happened with Tom Kelly. When you've been in baseball for as long as those guys have then eventually the travel and managing a ballclub will get to you.
The one thing I don't understand is that he offered to resign when the team wasn't doing so well and was asked to rethink his decision. I think (if health is not a factor) that it's irresponsible and selfish of Hargrove to leave the team when they're doing so well. He could've just said that he hasn't changed his mind but will finish out the year.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
I thought Hargrove was a lousy manager last year. He rarely used the bench or put the game in motion or did anything that was the least bit original or aggressive. He'd pencil in the same lineup day after day after day and his pitching rotation rarely varied until even he couldn't avoid noticing that Joel Pineiro sucked.
Hargrove was much better this year but I wonder how much that had to do with the M's bringing in McLaren as the bench coach. I guess we'll find out since it's McLaren's team now.Comment

Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
I think the odds of it have gone up. It's been rumored that Ichiro didn't care for Hargrove's management style and was much closer to McLaren who was a Mariners coach when Ichiro first signed with the M's during the Piniella era.
The #1 conspiracy theory floating around Seattle is that Ichiro had told M's management that he wouldn't re-sign with the team as long as Hargrove was the manager so Hargrove knew he was a lame duck. I've seen no evidence for it but that's the speculation.Comment

Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
If this is the way McLaren is going to handle the bullpen for the rest of the year I have 3 words:
BRING HARGROVE BACK!
That was god awful handling of a bullpen. That's the kind of crap you expect from a 1st year manager in JV high school.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
Hargrove quit on this team. I don't want him back for any reason. Ever.Comment

Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
It's nice that he wants to be with his family if that is the case, but if that is the reason, I think he should have set a better example of sticking things out and finished the year.

Re: Mike Hargrove resigns
I see what your saying, but baseball is a game that will never be as important as ensuring your families well being. I know the team is an extention of family, but I'm sure you know what I mean.Comment
