Barry Bonds pinched a nerve in his hip while swinging during Thursday's series finale, but he's in the lineup on Friday night.

Bonds had his back adjusted during the game last night to alleviate the problem. He hopes to play in all three games this weekend. "My body's fine. My knees are fine," Bonds said before batting practice. "I have no problems with my knees. People don't understand the baseball grind."

Now as a Giants fan, I'm a bit disappointed that neither Bonds/Griffey are competing because they are simply FUN to watch. Can I blame either of them for not competing? No. These guys are old and both have had some health issues specially later in their careers. The fans voted both of them to play the all star game, nothing about a homerun derby, which both of them have done plenty of them. It's time for the next generation to take center stage. Not to mention, both have things to still accomplish, whether it be breaking the HR record or playing a handful more years. At this point in each career, it's simply too much for them.

I'd like to see both in the Derby, but it does mess with players swings. Look what happened to David Wright last year. 20 homers before the break, 6 afterwards.

Considering Bonds said the 2-round Derby in 1996 tired him out...I'd say it's a good thing he's not in the 3-round Derby in 2007.

I hope Fielder loses in the first round. My fantasy needs him to not be cursed the second half of the season.

Agreed, Bobby Abreu comes to mind.

It didn't seem to hurt Ryan Howard. He had more home runs after the derby (30) than before (28).

The field is staying at eight says this article from MLB.com:

The duo will join a field for Monday night's event at San Francisco's AT&T Park that includes three of the top five home run hitters in the Major Leagues and four of the top 10: Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder, who leads the NL and is second in the Majors with 27 homers; Philadelphia's Ryan Howard; Minnesota's Justin Morneau (tied for fifth in the Majors with 20) and Florida's Miguel Cabrera (tied for 10th with 17).

Two more participants will be added to complete the field of eight.
Curious as to who they will be.

Hasn't he won HR Derby like 3 or 4 times. If so,then he's done his duty.

Add Phat Albert to the lineup:

SAN FRANCISCO -- Albert Pujols of St. Louis has agreed to participate in the State Farm Home Run Derby on Monday, Major League Baseball officials confirmed Sunday.

The six-time All-Star joins Milwaukee's Prince Fielder, Philadelphia's Ryan Howard, Florida's Miguel Cabrera, Minnesota's Justin Morneau, Detroit's Magglio Ordonez and Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the eight-player event, with one participant still to be named.

I wish Albert wasn't participating, I'd rather he rest his elbow and hammy than do the homerun derby. That said he hasn't hit a HR for 22 games (longest drought in his career), so maybe the HR derby can get him going again.

Alex Rios is also going to be in the HR Derby. I dunno, he isn't a pull hitter. He's a guy that uses all fields for his power but I hope he does well. The Blue Jays have a history of sending guys to that event who suck it up.

I know he is a good player and having a good year. But his name does not get me exited for the HR derby. They need to do something like just make it for young, on the rise stars or something to bring the glamor back to it. IMO.

Hey at least it gives him exposure. He's one of the best young players in baseball but he doesn't get much pub by playing in Toronto. I honestly think that if he had played in last year's ASG and done well people would talk about him more in the US.

                              What's wrong, Barry?

So as I mentioned a few days ago, Barry Bonds has declined to participate in the Home Run Derby on Monday night. He cited reasons such as the extra round being too tough on his legs. All around the internet you read articles and people are mentioning his "sore legs" excuse, and some are actually buying it. Please.

The man who is just games away from breaking the all-time HR record doesn't want to put on a show? The same man who's home town fans are the only reason he was even elected to the All-Star game? Giants fans certainly didn't vote Barry in to see him play left field. They want home runs, and so does everyone else. Isn't Barry the self proclaimed "hardest working man in baseball?" The man who has put on 150 pounds of muscle since making it to the big leagues can't stand at home plate and take a few hacks? What will the winner take, 50 swings? I don't doubt the Derby is tiring, but you would think the steroids would have him able to hack it.

It's no wonder nobody likes the guy. He's about as selfish as it gets. To have the audacity to use steroids and break Hank Aaron's incredible record is bad enough. To shun the only fans you have left by accepting the invitation to the all-star team and then breaking their hearts by not participating in the event that is built for you...that's terrible.

I hope when Barry does hit number 756, that nobody makes a sound. No clapping, no cheering, even no booing. He's just not worth it. Nobody should recognize this achievement, including Bud Selig, Hank Aaron, and the fans of MLB. Don't give Barry the attention that he wants.

Major League Baseball is an entertainment business. When will Barry learn that if it wasn't for the few fans he has left, he wouldn't have a job? Bonds could sure take a few lessons from Alex Rodriguez, the man who thankfully will break the HR record about a decade down the road. A-Rod has decided to play in the All-Star game, despite a sore hamstring that kept him out of some games this week.

"Three-point-nine million votes, you feel like you have a responsibility to the fans. It's been feeling pretty good. I'm grateful, I thank the good Lord for being able to play the game of baseball. I think the game is about the fans, and with that many votes, you feel a responsibility to go out and play."

Do us a favor, Barry. Stay at home during the all-star festivities. These next few days are about the fans, something you wouldn't know about.

I like Rios alot, not sure if he's well suited for the competition though. Would have liked to see Cabrera but Pujols filling in is nice. Howard has to be the favorite again, but I think Magz Ordonez could do well
