    Re: Best pitching rotation

The best rotation right now is Boston because of their depth.

      Win Probability Added.

Nice stat, its not perfect or predictive, but it tells what kind of positive or negative impact each player has on their team's probability of winning. In the numbers I posted the WPA is cumulative for their starting rotation for the entire season. The A's WPA for their starting pitching is pretty impressive so far.

To go into it a little further, here's a fangraph of the BoSox/Tigers game yesterday. At the start of the game each team has 50% chance of winning. Each play has a positive or negative impact for the team and either increases or decreases the odds of winning.

      <img src=http://www.fangraphs.com/tgraphs/20070706_RedSox_Tigers_0.png>

Tavarez was terrible yesterday and had a WPA for the game of -.319. Meaning his pitching lowered Boston's odds of winning the game by nearly 32%.

Starting rotation, IMO it's San Diego and everyone else.

The elite of "everyone else" would probably be Boston (when Schilling is healthy), Detroit, Oakland, and MAYBE the Angels. The Angels are sort of puzzling. Lackey, Weaver and Escobar have been great...Santana's been good at home, and Colon...well, yeah.

I kinda figured Boston would be up there. Also, I haven't seen many games with the Braves this year but they use to have a rotation that(IMO) was a tough one to break down and had an excellent rotation. It's good to see Smoltz is still on the mound . That guy has been around along time and I have to give him credit for being a class act and still in the game.

True, after the Padres 5 Major League starters, it's a huge dropoff in depth (Mike Thompson and Tim Stauffer aren't fooling anyone, jury is still out on Clay Hensley).

Not to be a Homer but I'd like to think that the Giants have a decent rotation. If they only had more run support....that's the story of the Giants. :y4:

The White Sox rotation has been very good this year. Everything else sucks.

                Yesterday really hurt, though.

                  1) Padres

                  3) Angels

Oakland's staff is better to this point in the season. And I'll see your healthy Curt Schilling and raise with a healthy Rich Harden (if there is such a thing).
Yeah, and Boston plays 81 of their games at Fenway, a hitter friendly park. Plus, though I never bought all the preseason hype about NY having the best offense ever, they do have a lot of firepower up and down that lineup and since MLB has unbalanced schedules thats also worth considering. The closest thing Oakland has thats comparable (that they play a lot) is the Angels. LAA might have a better offense though. Id have to look at it more. Though total runs affect ERA, scoring more runs doesnt mean an offense is better if its streaky.

Everyone in the NL West suffers from run support. Everyone on the Padres rotation has been plagued by it. They get a quality start out there and still lose (Jake Peavy's recent outing of 7 IP and 3 ER... a decent offense could at least get him a no decision).

That would be the Twins. Who knows how Liriano will do after the surgery, but he should go back close to his old form. Then add in Garza, who looked great in his first start of the year on Friday, there is no reason to not believe they will be a great 1-2 combo, after Santanan is done, which is a long way from now.

The Tigers are tops. Verlander is an All-Star with a no hitter to his credit this season. Bonderman, with any run support in his first 4 starts, would be 13-1 right now, and should be on the All Star team. Kenny Rogers is back, and pitching well. Andrew Miller is a stud in training, and will only get better. Nate Robertson is the 5th starter, and has struggled, but likely will turn it around.

As for depth, Chad Durbin was argueably the teams third best starter in the first half, and he was moved to the bullpen. Zach Miner can also start.

It would be hard to find a 1-2 combo better than Verlander/Bonderman right now.

Also would be hard pressed to find another team with better tallent in the minors.
