I think Maddux will be back next year if he a good season this year because he is 27 wins from 300 and may actually draw some people to Turner Field to see the Braves play as he gets close to 300. Also, the Braves can significantly lower their payroll by not re-signing Javy Lopez and Vinny Castilla next year. That's a total savings of $11.5 million.

I don't think many gm's will tell you 16-6 is worth that much money. Millwood would've been a better signing. Did anyone else know Maddux hasn't won 20 since '93? I'm not saying he's not good, I guess I had just assumed he'd won 20 somewhere within the last 2-3 years.Comment

Re: Maddux signs largest single-season contract ever.
I agree with Cook... Maddux is one of the best ever, and he's still worth the money. Maddux, Schilling, Johnson, Martinez - those guys are difference makers on the mound. Yeah, Millwood is younger, and he's had a couple of good years, but there is no way he is better than Maddux at this point in his (Millwood's) career. Sit back, watch Greg win 16-20, and probably keep your team in playoff contention...
just my opinion...

"Sit back, watch Greg win 16-20, and probably keep your team in playoff contention..."
And watch him implode in the playoffs. Dude is under .500 in the playoffs and that's not who I want going to war for me. I'd have much rather had Millwood so I'm a little pissed about the way John has handled things this offseason. No way in hell Maddux pitches 200 innings or has an ERA under 3.00 this year...that's what Millwood will do in Philly.
The only good things to happen to the Braves this offseason were the additions of Hampton (who will turn it around I hope) and the signing of Robert Fick....finally a decent first baseman.Comment

Re: Maddux signs largest single-season contract ever.
db,
I like Millwood, don't get me wrong... but I'd take you up on that bet about who has the 200 IP and under 3.00 ERA. Don't forget his playoff record counts his days with the Cubs when he was in the first couple years of his career. Granted, he hasn't been "lights out" in the post season, but he's been better than his stats indicate.
I sympathize with you regarding the Millwood deal, which was just for financial implications, right? I'm an Indians fan, so I can relate - to the "bad times" at least!

You'll be hearing Cubs and playoffs in the same sentence many times this year and beyond.Comment

Re: Maddux signs largest single-season contract ever.
I don't think Maddux's playoff record for the Cubs really hurts him. He only pitched one playoff game for the Cubs against the Giants in 1989 and I can still see the pitch he threw Will Clark in Game 1. I yelled, "Oh No!" before the ball was halfway to the plate. He completely groved it and Clark sent it way out of Wrigley.
As far as Millwood goes....he had a great year last year, but he really stunk it up the two previous years so I wouldn't say he would be lock for 200 IP and a ERA under 3.00.Comment
