1) He definitely did not say "mine". You can see it clear as day on the tape it's not even close to "mine".
2) No veteran player would ever fall for that move. I also played baseball when I was younger and since when do you only yell, "Mine!" or something similar only once? Let alone at the very last second especially on a routine pop-up. Of all the baseball I played it was always repeated several times. "I got it, I got it, I got it, I got it!" Heck, just look at any replay these days on a play that involves that situation and you will see the CF/SS/2B calling for the ball several times. Cheap shot move by A-Rod? If you think so that's fine. It was also a bonehead play by Clark as well.
3) It's not like the ball was hit into a gray area, it was absolutely the third baseman's ball. No SS would call a 3B off on a ball hit there. The SS would not call the 3B off on a can-of-corn pop up two seconds before it was going to be caught by the 3B. If theoretically he was going to call off the 3B, Clark would have heard a warning much earlier.
4) Several players from past eras (non-Yankees) said this type of thing happened all the time when they played.
It was probably the biggest overreaction by a team I have ever seen. Was it called for? Definitely not. But to get your panties in a bunch for three months and throw at A-Rod twice is a little absurd.
