    Help...I can't hit!

I'm new to the HH series and I can't hit for nothing and it's costing me games. I think I hit better from the behind the pitcher but I hate seeing where the catcher sets up...it's almost like cheating. Tim Hudson just threw a 4 hit shutout against me. He had a no no through 6. Batting Practice doesn't help because all you get are fast balls. Hudson's changeup is lethal. Any suggestions. I don't swing at everything but when there are times when I get frustrated and will tend to swing at everything. I'm playing on all-star with pitches up a notch. Tips please!

do you press a direction while hitting? don't. i don't do this (i didn't in hh 2003, at least - don't have 2004 yet) and i hovered around .500 last year on hof level. you really don't have to press a direction - as long as the pitches you are swinging at are strikes, your batter will go and get the pitches at their location. try to minimize swinging at balls though.

take pitches. you might want to get into the habit of taking the first pitch the pitcher throws for each batter. if a ball looks outside, take it. getting into a hitter's count in this game is extremely helpful, just like in real life. in fact, you can use any real life strategy in this game. it is just like real life, so think real life hitting.

if taking pitches doesn't work, you might want to bump the level down until you're ready for all star. also, isn't it possible to set batting practice to mix up pitch types?

Good advice. The directional method rarely generates much on the ball. Swing without it and it will decrease your strike zone (b/c you'll know you can;t reach anything too far off the plate) and should give you better success.

Thanks fellas...I don't use the d-pad that much. I use it when I expect to get a splitter, sinker, or fork because I'm expecting it to drop out of the strike zonen. I may but it down until I get the hang of it. I usually give up runs early but then I cruise the rest of the game. I lose cus I haven't been scoring any runs!

my problem is the inability to score without the home run

Seems like 90% of the runs I score come via the longball.

                Not exactly good.

again, i feel i should mention real life baseball. think about real baseball when playing this game. if you're down a run and you get a guy on base with no outs, manufacture a run. steal. bunt. sac fly. do whatever you can to get your guy to the plate.

it is weird that you get most of your runs off homers. doubles, triples. hell, if you get a guy to second, a single will drive him in unless the guy on second is mo vaughn or john olerud. just like real life.

are you playing with the royals?

I'm currently playing as the Braves.

And like the Braves over the past few years, their hitters do tend to get a little home run happy at times.

There are situations where I should bunt the runner over to second, but I see a FAT slow pitch down the middle so I try to hit it 500 feet, only to pop it up.

Yeah, I'm not exactly good on the fundamentals (making contact, getting runners over) but I do understand how the game should be played.

Just a bad habit I need to lose.

                            SoMiss,

You can adjust the types of pitches you get in Batting practice. Patience is the biggest key and swinging at pitches you can hit, I use the directional swing all the time. Not sure if that helps me or hurts me, right now I am having a hard time getting people out.
