Re: Indians starter Paul Byrd outed for HGH use between 2002-2005

so no apologies from anyone huh? what the chances Fox runs with this story tonight anyways?

    Here's the report from rotoworld.com

Paul Byrd admits to using HGH, though he hasn't done during the season, because three different doctors diagnosed him as suffering from adult growth-hormone deficiency.
Byrd said he was diagnosed with a tumor on his pituitary gland at the base of his brain, a condition that may have contributed to his deficiency, doctors told him. He paid for his HGH with his own credit card, and MLB was aware of his usage of the substance. "I have not taken any hormone apart from a doctor's care and supervision," Byrd said. "The Indians, my coaches and MLB have known that I have had a pituitary gland issue for some time and have assisted me in getting blood tests in different states. I am currently working with an endocrinologist and will have another MRI on my head after the season to make sure that the tumor hasn't grown."

Byrd was precribed the drug, and the Indians and MLB knew. FOX did run this story. And Paul Byrd has bounced around since then too. Since 2002 he has played for the Royals, Braves, and Indians. That's not exactly staying in one place, 3 teams in six years.

My question is, if they were prescribed why was he purchasing them from the same place that is accused of illegally distributing HGH to other athletes. It was also reported that some of his prescriptions were written by a dentist who's license was suspended. Something doesn't add up here.

if MLB would come out and just tell everyone that they knew... then this would all go away... Considering the Indians are in a fight for their life game 7 and don't need any distractions.... I don't expect MLB to say anything lol.

From the same writers that didn't do enough homework to know why he was taking them in the first place?

Even so, he had been diagnosed with a condition in which HGH is an approved treatment. He bought the drug with his own credit card and was open about it with mlb and the teams he played for. It is implied in the article that the Braves at least were aware of it since it was sent to their spring training facility under his name.

And just because the place sold the stuff illegally doesn't mean that all the HGH they sold was through inproper channels. MLB has known about this, and I'm sure they looked into it, and found that it was legitimate. So I'm okay with it.

Its not like these guys are hack writers. They've probably done more research on performance enhancing drugs in baseball than anybody alive.

I'm guessing they knew about it but chose not to put it in their story because it would lessen the impact.

                  Did you read the article?

To me the facts presented by the SF Chronicle hold more weight than Paul Byrd's word. Maybe you're right and his HGH was all legitimate but at this point it doesn't look that way. I don't think we know the whole story yet.

Well if he was taking it for a medical condition so we shouldn't automatically throw the guy under the bus. It IS strange that he would obtain the HGH from a dubious source so maybe there's more to it.

As to the whole "why should MLB even bring this up" argument. Those who think this way are falling for selig and MLB's hopes that people would look at this and shrug their shoulders. It seems to me that you people are failing to realize that the law of the land trumps whatever lax rules there are in baseball at that time.

Yes Selig and co. should've said "here's what we know and we're sorry" then this would never be the story it is but they didn't and now the only way to bring credibility to what has become known as the steroid era is to out those who have violated the spirit of the game.

Again tho, if some players took HGH or roids for a legit reason and obtained them from a credible source then I have absolutely no problem with it. It's when you start obtaining them for less solid reasons and from shady people that's when I have no sympathy.

Amazing timing, I'm sure Fox and MLB is happy, it's obvious they want Boston to move on. I doubt I'm even watching tonight's game, just feels fixed.

Last night's game felt fixed to me.

I know the Boston fans will defend the result but Carmona was squeezed so much that it obviously affected and frustrated him. Hopefully it won't be so blatant tonight.

btw just want to say one last thing on this issue. As a professional journalist, I am appalled that these two writers just ignore facts to make their story stronger...

Leaving out the part about Byrd having a tumor isn't just bad writing, it's a blatant oversight worthy being fired over. If I or anyone else decided to pull that crap you can bet we'd be sent packing...

Fudging facts or leaving out important information to further your cause is beyond bush. I sincerely hope Byrd sues them for their wreckless behavior.

This is just like the Boston reporter changing the story to make it seem like Garko was trashing the Sox fans and the team... the media has an agenda... and it's clearly been shown since Game 5.

None the less, I expect MLB to come out tomorrow and say they knew all along.... Funny thing is they could easily do it today.... but wouldn't you know it they're biting their collective tongues....

I don't even think I should have the sound on tonight... can't wait to see how bad Fox butchers the story.

Thank goodness I'm getting out of the writing field and becoming a teacher. I can't be associated with this crap anymore. (Of course it's more than just the treatment of the Indians, but this is just a shining example of why I need to get out before I become the slime that most top flight reporters are today.)

Too bad the TV and radio transmissions are off by a few seconds because i'd suggest listening to the ESPN radio call. It's what i've done the last couple games.

The timing of this is unfortunate.

Paul Byrd seems like a good guy, a very weird guy too.
