Re: Torre in Dodger Blue?
Mad Dog talked about this yesterday, and I kind of agree with him. He said, with Mattingly having no ties to the Dodger organization, he may not be as much of a shoo-in to be manager in LA as he would have with the Yankees. If Joe Torre leaves the job in 3-4 years, there's no real tie that would make the Dodgers say, "we've gotta hire Mattingly", like there was with the Yanks... Maybe there's some unwritten understanding or something that Donnie gets the job when Joe splits.Comment

Don't know why people think Torre will instantly make the Dodgers a better team.
If anything, Saito, Broxton, and Proctor should get their TJ surgeries scheduled.Comment

The deal is, Torre is a hot commodity in the baseball world. Three of his former bench coaches have managed in other organizations after serving Torre. Those teams (Marlins, Orioles, Mets) obviously thought that Torre was a positive influence on them. The same will likely happen for Mattingly. Teams like having a manager that players can get along with and Torre exemplifies that character in every way. Mattingly is extremly similar and continues to remind people of Torre (which is why I think Cashman ultimately didn't want Mattingly. It would have been more of the same and he obviously wanted something very different).
Even if Mattingly doesn't ultimately follow Torre as manager of LA, he'll get offers to manage somewhere.
There's talk right now that if the Rangers don't resign Jaramillo they are interested in having Mattingly as their hitting coach. So, he's obviously already piqued the interest of one team, though only as a hitting coach."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Torre in Dodger Blue?
While i generally dislike Bill Plachke of the LA Times i do agree with him when he says it seems like Dodger fans are viewing Torre's coming to the Dodgers like Phil Jackson returning to the Lakers. Jackson's first go around with the Lakers was great when you consider the talent he had to work with, his second go around has not been as good yielding a team that can't make it out of the first round of the playoffs.
As a lot of people have said Torre is a finisher, not a builder. He's not getting a Dodger team on the verge of winning a championship, he's getting a Dodger team that he is going to have to build into a winner. The Dodgers are not going to spend $200 million a year on players, they don't go after the Bobby Abreu's at the trading deadline they get the Shea Hillenbrand's. Torre will mostley have to win with what he's got.
I think there are a lot of Dodger fans setting themselves up for a huge letdown.Comment

Secondly, no one thinks we are suddenly contenders just because Joe is coming.
He adds something to the Dodgers that they have not had since the days of Tommy, Legitimacy.
Joe is a great Club house guy who does not have dog houses, and he is a fair man. Little let this team implode when they started falling apart late in our run for the division.
Torre is an awesome manager, I know he was not as much so before the Yanks gave him the opportunity.
To add in, the fact that maybe, just maybe we get certain players or player to come follow him here and it is a win win situation.
You really think that Dodger fans would choose to keep Little over Joe if polled? I hope you do not think that.
We are not setting ourselves up for a let down. We just think the Blue crew will be better off with Torre, not worse off.
In the end only time will tell, and I'll stick to my guns on this call.Comment

Re: Torre in Dodger Blue?
Just heard the Dodgers were granted exemption from interviewing minority candidates so they can hire Torre. Interesting.
It was noted that the Dodgers have an excellent track record for minority hires.Comment

Re: Torre in Dodger Blue?
MLB either recognized their track record or realized that if a team wants Torre and Torre wants them then it wouldn't make sense to force fake interviews."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Don't understand why you woudl watch a team just because a manager is there. Got news for you, Torre isn't a miracle worker and the Dodgers will still be the same team they were last year.Comment
