Don't be surprised if Johan Santana is a Yankee before the season gets underway.

The Yanks are just one of the couple of teams that are interested in obtaining Johan Santana's services. Link I am hearing the Twins are asking for at least three blue chip prospects from the Yanks; Jose Tabata, Phil Hughes, and Robinson Cano. That's one hefty price. If we could acquire the likes of Santana for Tabata/Jackson, Cano, and Melky, I'm going to be ecstatic. Either way, I'm very pleased in hearing about this.

I wouldn't trade Cano at all.

If we do Tabata/Jackson, Melky, Kennedy, and maybe a lesser prospect like Jeff Marquez, I'd do it. I don't want to trade Cano, Hughes, or Chamberlain though. If we need to give up any of them, I'd rather just take my chances that he reaches free agency and then try and sign him then.

Let's be honest, if we could get him for a bag of peanuts, nobody is going to object, but to get that kind of talent you have to give back just as equal. I personally don't have an objection to trading Cano, Chamberlain or Hughes, but just not the entire trio. I also think you're are being naive, just like every other Yankees fan, if you think he's going to be available as a FA.

Isn't it amazing how Hank is talking to the media? Other clubs are also talking to the Twins too but are not saying anything to give up their hand. This guy loves to talk and doesn't know when to shut up. Wonder how the Twins are thinking about his yapping?

            Nope, not at all.

If he doesn't reach free agency, life goes on. I didn't say whether I expect either my proposal to be enough, or if I expect him to reach free agency. Just that that's as far as I'd be willing to go. If that's enough, I understand, but I'd rather move on.

Santana is one of those guys that you can justify giving the farm to in order to get but the problem for the Yanks is that if they give away Hughes and/or Cano who the hell are you going to replace them with?

it'd be a very tricky proposition at best and a possible "fixing one hole but creating two more" situation at worst. Personally i'd try to talk the Twinkies down on their demands. It doesn't help that Hank has a big mouth and is talking to the media though.

trade him a bunch of lesser players not the major league guys

You won't get him if you offer a bunch of lesser guys. The Twins are not going to take the PR hit of trading away Santana for "may be good someday" players. They're going to want one or two Major League guys and a top flight prospect. Remember they're dealing away one of, if not THE best arm in MLB these days.

I just don't see Santana getting traded unless Minnesota drops their demands. He has a no trade clause which means the starting point for talks will probably be in the $25 million a year range. As good as Santana is, paying that much money AND giving up 2-3 top prospects is way too much. If I'm the Yankees or Red Sox, I'd wait and take my chances in FA.

                      Don't be surprised?

I knew Johan would be a Yankee like 3 years ago

if the Twins were smart they would try to resign him...

but we know how they do business.

if they were prudent, they would trade him...letting him become a FA is about the worst thing they could do.

I would trade Soriano and Lilly for him, though, if I were the Cubbies. Hell, Aram.

If I'm the Twins and know Santana won't resign, if I could get Cano and Melky I definately pull the trigger. Santana is the best pitcher bar-none, but if you can get two great young players like those you do it.
